Real Weddings :: Olivia & Carter Wed at Monterey Valley

0 · Feb 8, 2017 ·

I’ve gotten to know Olivia over the years as we’ve collaborated on several photography projects as she’s the most gorgeous model.  But there’s nothing quite as sweet as working on a real wedding.

Since she had been exposed to so many pretty projects, Olivia had a great eye and knew exactly what she wanted.  Simply blush blooms, vintage gold details and a rustic barn setting.  It was perfect.

The only down side to a wedding in mid July is the lack of peonies.  Their availability is few and far between.  Those that you can find had a hefty price tag and we just couldn’t make them a reality until Carter stepped in.  About a month before their wedding I received the most romantic of requests from Carter, as he had learned of Olivia’s desire for peonies and he wondered if there was any way he could surprise her with an arrangement for in her dressing room.  Of course I obliged and was even able to sneak a few extra blooms for the arrangement into Olivia’s bouquet.

So as the sun shown down on a hot Friday in July, Olivia and Carter became Mr & Mrs – surrounded with gorgeous countryside, the love of family and friends and of course, beautiful blooms by their side.

Real Weddings :: Jarvie & Hank’s Leelanau Wedding

0 · Jan 9, 2017 ·

I know I promised this wedding would be posted Friday.  But something that I have learned is life is unpredictible and so is your internet service when you live in the country.  I’m trying to cut myself a little slack in 2017 and not get so up tight about little hiccups such as this.  Plus this wedding is definitely worth the wait.

If you know me at all, then you know that Lake Leelanau holds the key to my heart.  So for that reason alone, I could dub this wedding one of my favorites of all times.  But then I get to add in a beautiful vineyard, gorgeous watercolors and calligraphy and stunning film photography and this wedding alone just about made my year.  Not to mention how incredibly fun, authentic and just wonderful people that Jarvie, Hank and their families really are.

The story started a little year prior to their wedding, we began searching for the perfect location to host their Northern Michigan celebration.  It was my first tour of Aurora Cellars and right away I knew it was special.  Thankfully, Jarvie and Hank recognized it too.  We took a chance on a tented space that was just a sketch and a farmhouse that was still pink.

Throughout the planning process, the theme stayed the same.  There was a focus on simplicity, with a clean and organic feel, a Northern Michigan vibe with a Tuscan twist, however still wanting all of their Chicago friends to feel right at home.

A slight kiss of pink accented the mainly white day, so we brought in some California roses and luscious pink peonies and displayed them as many places as possible.  Jarvie found she had a hidden love for calligraphy, so Graceline was hired to address everything from her save-the-date envelopes to her custom invitations and all the signage in between.

June 18th arrived with a sun beaming bright in the sky and the smiles were contagious throughout the vineyard.  The guests were greeted with refreshing lemonade and ushered through the vines to the ceremony site.  Cocktails and Aurora’s divine wine waited near the farmhouse on the lawn.  And dinner & dancing took place under a pristine white tent.

And the evening ended with a most glorious Leelanau sunset.  I would plan every wedding on the peninsula for that reason alone.

Jarvie & Hank :: The Inspiration

0 · Jan 5, 2017 ·

Greenery, calligraphy, winery.  The three key words that best describe the wedding day of Jarvie and Hank – which will be in my journal tomorrow.  But before I share the wedding in its entirety, I’d like to give a little behind the scenes of what went into the planning and design of the day.

Lake Leelanau Wedding | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater Photography

Photography: Ashley Slater Photography

Jarvie is very clean and classic.  She’s elegant and has a sophisticated yet fun air about her.  The couple resides in Chicago, but have Michigan roots as far north as the U.P.  Decorative elements that were really important we lots of fresh greenery (she loves garlands), beautiful and soft calligraphy and simplicity.

We wanted it to feel very classic and not too rustic, even though part of the day would take place near Aurora Cellar’s farm house.  But the farmhouse itself has a very modern and almost minimalistic feel with amazing lighting inside, so it blended all of the various concepts we had in our head quite well.  It gave accommodations for sleeping and getting ready, it was a perfect backdrop for cocktail hour and the entire day could be located on the same property without guests tiring of the same scenery.

Below you’ll find the mood board that we used to start pulling together some of the visuals of the design.  You’ll notice when I publish the entire wedding tomorrow, that we didn’t copy any one of these details, but rather used them as a guide and inspiration.  This gave us an anchor point and when we started to get a little overwhelmed by options, we could always fall back and see what best fit our original vision.

Working with what the venue already provided was a perfect starting point.  Harvest tables, white lawn chairs and bistro lighting were all included in the rental.  These are bonus items that made us love the space even more.  But Jarvie really wasn’t a fan of extremely long tables in perfect little rows as it doesn’t encourage conversation. So we got creative and came up with a floorplan that ensured that no two tables would be pushed end to end and all of her guests could easily mingle.  Simple white plates were topped with textured eggshell napkins to add contrast against the dark tabletops and very subtly layer in another shade of ivory and white.

The main tasting room has a Tuscan feel, and while it wasn’t a direct host of the wedding day, it did host the rehearsal dinner and guests would be passing by it.  To tie in both this Tuscan and farmhouse setting, we added white ceramic and terra cotta pots for the centerpieces and cake table.  And tried to pull in other touches that would feel like an authentic Italian vineyard with olive branches and grapevine used throughout the design.

And of course flowers are always my favorite part of the décor.  June in Northern Michigan means local peony season and one simply can’t go wrong with a big, beautiful peony.  But as we were focusing on that vineyard, Tuscan, and even slightly Napa vibe – I wanted to bring in some California grown garden roses.  And they were so pretty, multiple heads on one branch, the slightest hints of butter and blush and then a few blossoms in the perfect shade of a ballet slipper.  So many textures and ruffles.  A few accents of olive branch and bay leaf were added and then we foraged local grapevine (not from the vineyard!) and the rest of our foliage was native to the area.

I mentioned Jarvie’s love of garlands and in a perfect world, she would have loved to see lush greenery lining the entire length of each 8 foot harvest table.  However, they also wanted a family style meal.  Meal service of this style means that lots of plates need to be placed on the table and your table scape needs to be able to accommodate this.  So we opted for 3 smaller floral centerpieces that could easily be moved slightly when platters were placed on the table.  We added her greens in other places, on her ceremony arbor, draping on the bars and into the rehearsal dinner décor.

The entire day was very intentional and well thought out.  It was beautiful and we could not have asked for dreamier weather.  And Jarvie and Hank – they’re such a handsome couple who I wish much happiness for all the years to come.

5 Holiday Outfit Inspirations

0 · Dec 12, 2016 ·

Tonight I am headed to my one and only holiday party of 2016.  It’s the singular chance I’ll have this holiday season to get dressed up. I feel like I need to make my outfit selection amazing because after this, I’ll be back to my standard black leggings and winter boots until April rolls around.

Every year I dream of getting all dolled up for a glitzy and classic holiday cocktail party.  I dream of sequin and rhinestones, sparkling champagne and festive martinis. Rarely have I recieved an invite to any such party, but just the same I was thinking about what the more stylish “me” would wear and it made me reminice back to outfits I saw throughout the wedding season, and even years past. I’ve worked with a lot of extremely stylish couples who also have extremely stylish guests.  And a lot of these fashions would double really well as holiday party attire.  So I’m sharing just a few of my favorite go to pieces from the years gone by.  Clothing that I am extremely jealous is not part of my wardrobe.

Tulle Skirts

These classic skirts have been on point for several years now and I still love them.  They come in nearly every shade in the rainbow and can be paired with anything from denim or flannel shirts to crop tops and lace numbers.

Sequins

Nothing says holiday to me more than something sparkly.  And sequin dresses will forever and always be my go-to option.

The Little Black Dress

We all have that classic little number that puts on in the mood to party. Nothing screams classic elegance and hugs our curves just right like your little black dress.    I have several because black, never goes out of fashion.

Jumpsuits

We live in Michigan and baby, it’s cold outside.  Sometimes pants really are the best option.  I love jumpsuits for the simple fact that they are totally moveable and practical but don’t make me sacrafice style.

Hats

Tulle Hat | The Day's Design | Hetler Photography

another one from the 2013 archives, Hats Off to the New Year with Hetler Photography

I love hats and other hair accessories.  And remember that quick blip of time when I actually made them and opened an Etsy shop?  I might not be pushing that side of my business any longer, but I still think adding an accessory to the top of one’s head is an excellent idea.

Do you have other favorite holidays outfit ideas?  I’d love to hear and I’m still a bit undecided about what I’ll be wearing tonight.

PS – itsn’t it crazy to look back and see how far your work has come?  These 2013 throwbacks – sheesh!!  I’ve learned so much and am so grateful to be moving forward in the name of experience and progress.  Although I do still love working with Kellie of Hetler Photography 🙂

A Winter Glamour Shoot

0 · Dec 9, 2016 ·

The reasons behind creating a piece of art vary from time to time.  Sometimes it’s to stifle a creative itch.  Sometimes its the cure for boredom.  At times, it’s simply to experiment with a new flower or design.  And at times, it’s just for beauty’s sake.

During the slow winter months, dreams of miraculous blooms dance in my mind.  I long to touch petals and play with the green of leaves.  I eagerly wait in anticipation for that first little pop of chartreuse to appear on the grey trees.  And I always forget how overcome with busyness I was in the previous summer season.

There was a moment of quiet last winter.  A moment when I was asked to contribute to a glamour shoot happening at Kellie Hetler’s studio.  She has the biggest heart and was seeking to pay it forward, offering a free glamour session, complete with hair and makeup, to a few deserving women.  We also brought in a bridal model to stand in front of a simple backdrop I fashioned with a few winter vines.

I met some really amazing women, all with their own stories to tell that day.  It just reminds one of how precious life is, how unique we all are.  And how we should never take life for granted.

Real Weddings :: Mattie & Nick, Married in May

0 · Dec 2, 2016 ·

Wedding colors seem to come in waves.  And about three years ago we were in the middle of a purple movement.  I got bored of the color really quickly as there seemed to be very little variation in shade, design and I even had two weddings in a row wearing the same bridesmaids dresses.  This royal Grimis hue was not causing my creative juices to thrive.

When Mattie and I began discussing her color scheme, I had a couple of flashbacks with she started talking about shades of amethyst.  But then she added dove grey and moody mauve and I got really excited.  She had this really sultry, in depth vision of pairing dramatic pewter and black accents against a classically soft spring color palette of lavender and lilac.  I certainly shouldn’t be surprised that Mattie had such impeccable tastes, she’s a wedding planner herself and has some gorgeous work in her portfolio (check out Spark & Wildflower).  I made the personal flowers and a topper for the cake and left the rest in Mattie’s very competent hands.  I simply loved how beautiful this wedding turned out.

5 Tips for Setting the Perfect Holiday Table

0 · Nov 18, 2016 ·

I can hardly believe Thanksgiving is less than a week away and Christmas will soon follow.  2016 will be gone in the blink of an eye.  I’m starting to get myself in to the holiday frame of mind and am always thinking ahead to the next big gathering. I won’t be playing host to any big parties this year, but I’m still starting to dig out some of my holiday décor and I can’t help but think about the perfect tablescape for any occasion.

Designing a tabletop has always been pretty natural for me.  But I’ve started to pay more attention to the why and the theory that’s behind all of these natural behaviors I have.  So today I’m sharing 5 of my personal tips for making your next dinner (or breakfast or brunch) party the best ever.  Or at least slightly more function, beautiful and fun.

TIps for Setting the Perfect Holiday Table | The Day's Design

Set the Mood

Think about the overall tone you’d like to set for the meal.  How will it be lit?  Candlelight adds some romance and charm while overhead lighting allows for Dad “to be able to see what he’s eating”.  Taper candles are more formal and while pillars and votives are slightly more casual but still very warm and inviting.  Adding varying heights to your candles will add glow all around (and dimension, which we’ll talk about later).

The types of plates, glassware and napkins will also play a big role in this tone.  Delicate, gold rimmed bone china will be fancier than pottery or more simple ceramic plates.  Stemmed glassware is generally more elegant than a ball glass.

Then consider your guests.  Who will be attending?  Is this adults only or should you make the table more fun for kids (or pets!?) who might show up for the party?

Tips for Decorating Thanksgiving Table | The Day's Design

Pay Attention to the Shapes & Lines of the Table

I personally love to mix up shapes.  I think it adds another level of interest.  Round plates are a predictable element on a tabletop.  However, mixing it up by adding square gives the design a modern, unexpected twist.  I also love rectangular dining tables for this reason.

There are also some less obvious lines to pay attention to.  Think of the row that your table runner is creating.  There’s a curved lined created by the arch of the taper candles.  Smooth and steady lines create a more calming environment.  Arched lines feel more elegant.  And a lack of lines all together will feel a bit chaotic and not give your eye a place to rest.

A general rule: round feels more feminine and romantic, softer.  Straight is clean, simple and more modern feeling.

Make sure the Design is Functional

This one is huge.  You can put all the beautiful things in the world on your table, but if it doesn’t have a function or purpose, then it’s just clutter.  Start with the items you actually need for your meal – glasses, plates, silverware, napkins.  You can play with the patterns and layouts of these things and make them really beautiful.  Choose platters and cutting boards that can decorate as well as be used as serving pieces.  Add bread baskets or domes for service of pastries and rolls.

And please don’t try to tell me that centerpieces don’t have a function because I highly disagree.  They serve as a focal and anchor point for the table.  They can be a conversation starter and an extra piece of pretty for the day – just make sure they’re not disrupting your view across the table because no one enjoys that.

Holiday Table Decor | The Day's Design

Add Layers for Extra Interest

Stacks of dishes on a table add an extra element of dimension.  Keeping all items on the same horizontal plane can feel rather dull but varying heights keep your eyes roaming the table and looking for more (and then they can rest on your lovely centerpiece J).

But again, make sure there’s function to the pieces you choose.  If you don’t need an extra plate on the table, don’t use it. Or if you really have your heart set on displaying some gorgeous porcelain bowls, serve soup.  Napkins can easily be folded to add height and napkin rings are a fun way to add extra, non-intrusive décor.

Thanksgiving Table Decor | The Day's Design

Smaller Pieces are Easier to Move

We’ve all been there.  You set the most beautiful holiday table with glittering ornaments, flickering candles and the most gorgeous floral centerpiece.  There’s only one problem, there’s no place the set the food.  Using petite budvases, miniature votive holders and other small scale items makes it easier to tweak the table setup as plates are being passed and food is served.

Thanksgiving Table Decor | The Day's Design

Have other tips or tricks?  I’d love to hear them! I’ll be sharing my full Thanksgiving tabletop design next week.  Have a great weekend!

Feminine & Romantic Boudoir Editorial

0 · Nov 9, 2016 ·

I don’t do many boudoir projects.  With them being so personal in nature, I think clients try to involve a few vendors as possible.  And then there’s the question of what to do with the pictures?  Do you create an album or gift box for your husband?  Is it appropriate to hang them as wall art?

I personally think it’s a really beautiful gift.  I think they can be romantic and raw, delicate and feminine and something that doesn’t even necessarily need to be given or displayed to anyone, it’s alright to keep treasures like this to yourself.  It’s a way to remind yourself that you are all woman – not just a mommy, career warrior or housewife.  There’s a romantic side buried deep inside just waiting for the confidence and occasion to be unleashed.

Ashley approached me with this project over a year ago.  We wanted to create something beautiful that would hit home with both brides and married women alike.  We wanted to bring the outdoors in with greenery and florals.  Candlelight added some romance.  Plus a hand painted blue backdrop was the perfect amount of artsy detail.

But my favorite part was the deconstructed settee.  The stitching had started to fall loose and the fabric had seen better days.  But the curvature and lines were ideal and the wood was warm and welcoming.  Adding some ferns enhanced the outline and made it seem as though it had been sitting there longing to be sat on long enough for the earth to take over and reclaim what’s hers.

There’s a lot of focus right now about not being stuck in a man’s shadow.  Women want to show how powerful they are – we can do anything.  But I don’t think a woman needs to be “in power” to show how influential and mighty she really is.  We are strong and capable.  However, we were designed to be unique.  We get to experience the world in a way that will forever remain a mystery to the male population.  And this a really good thing.   We need to embrace the joys of being female and always keep it classy.

Real Weddings :: Shayla & John’s September Celebration

0 · Oct 26, 2016 ·

When Shayla and I started discussing her design and color scheme, the first things she did was show me this beautiful autumn sunset photo that was the source of her color inspiration.  It’s an image that I quickly burned into my memory.  And while I seldom referenced the actual photo, the memories forever served as my reference point with its vibrant colors transitioning from rich shades of burgundy, bittersweet, blush and golden rod then fading into traces of teal finally settling with a deep midnight blue.

As a couple, Shayla and John are bubbly and full of life.  Their joy fills a room and they love donuts – so obviously we quickly became friends.  For almost 18 months we worked together filling in details and making sure their wedding was a dream filled with rustic touches, vintage details and a little glam.  The setting set the stage for all things rustic, but adding a few sprinkles of gold and glittering linens against the worn wood tables and chairs created the perfect contrast.  The bright blooms and flower crowns gave Shayla the slightest boho edge and classic pearls and lace rounded out Shayla’s love of various wedding styles.

The month of September serves as a most stunning backdrop for a wedding day.  The warm breezes followed by the cool evening chills, the touches of autumn that have started to fill the air and the apples that dance on our palettes.  While we might all be glad we live in a world where there are Octobers, don’t let it over shadow the glory of September.

Always an Original

I finally broke down and wrote myself a blogging schedule or editorial calendar, if you’d like to get technical.  I have so many beautiful weddings just hanging around on my hard drive, waiting to be blogged. I’m trying to gain control. This is week one of the schedule.

However, I’m already breaking my plan because as I was scrolling through pictures, these images stuck out and I had to laugh to myself.

Grand Rapids Wedding | The Day's Design | Hetler Photography

Shayla and John are one of the most loveable, kindest and delightful couples you will ever meet. They’re the type of people who instantly add a ray of light to a darkened room.  And while I wasn’t there to witness the moment, I can just imagine what was happening in these pictures – I’m certain that Kellie was telling them to be serious and not smile.  But that’s not natural.  That doesn’t represent them at all.

Grand Rapids Wedding | The Day's Design | Hetler PhotographyGrand Rapids Wedding | The Day's Design | Hetler Photography

I’ve never seen a time when sweet Shayla didn’t have an expression of joy on her face.  And while I can imagine John being slightly more serious, a conversation doesn’t go too far without his lips forming a curve either.

Grand Rapids Wedding | The Day's Design | Hetler PhotographyGrand Rapids Wedding | The Day's Design | Hetler Photography

While I love a portrait with a solemn pose and calm expression, in this instance it just doesn’t seem natural.  Shayla had to hide her laughter and John was caught with a couple humorous looks on his face as well.

I was quickly reminded that we all should just be ourselves.  Do what you do and whatever feels natural.  Be one of a kind and always an original.  That’s how to always guarentee the best results.

There’s your Friday pep talk friends, may the little reminder carry you onward to a great weekend.

PS – Stay tuned for the rest of Shayla & John’s wedding which I’ll be sharing next week

Remember my Ferngully wedding? That was the opening to her 30+ page wedding style guide she gave me for their fern infused celebration.    And for that reason, and many more, I adored working with Crissie to make her wedding dreams a reality. The remaing pages were filled with poetry,  ferns, art deco details, watercolor touches and shades of glacier grey, lilac, dusk blue and navy peony.  No detail was left untouched.  From her discription of what Northern Michgian means to her with its intricate arms of fern across the forest floor to the selectively chosen gold accents.  She wanted her day to be “an elegant event in a natural setting.  The decor will gracefully elevate the oragnic feel of the surroundings, through a whimsical lens.” I think we accomplished just that.  And today you can see the full feature on Grey Likes Weddings.

Real Weddings :: Mary & Nic’s Foodie Celebration

0 · Oct 5, 2016 ·

Do you remember how hot it was last Labor Day?  I mean, Labor Day 2015 – not this past year.  That’s how far behind I am on blogging gorgeous momeries of days gone by.

Anyway, it was the hottest day I experienced all summer.  I remember so distinctly because I was beyond thankful for the garlands my bride has chosen to line her tables and how she had also shared some concern about having a September wedding and the potential for a good fall chill to join the night air as the sun departed for the day.

This did not happen.  I thought for sure I was going to melt into a puddle and the beautiful dahlias along with me.

The days leading up to Mary and Nic’s celebration were filled with trips to the farmer’s market, foraging excursions and finding the most succulent edible treats to add into their décor.  As I sat down with Mary discussing her wedding florals she gave me only two parameters – they love food, so herbs and other edible delights were welcome (and vary much a MUST) and then she showed me her maid of honor’s dress, which I should use for the color palette inspiration.

So instructions were followed, with artichokes and apples placed into the bouquets.  Bay leaves and olive branches were woven into garlands.  Pomegranates, persimmons and potted herbs decorated the tables.  And at the end of the night, I realized that someone thought the centerpieces looked so good, they actually took a bite.

They were wed at The Felt Mansion, which is one of my favorite venues in West Michigan.  The classic architecture and the brick, the charming pond and perfect getting ready space.  It’s all perfect.  The mansion’s front door served as the backdrop to the ceremony, with cocktails following in the lawn and a tented dinner.  Desserts were then served in the parlor with Love’s Ice Cream cart placed just outside.

And then we must talk about the dancing.  These people knew how to dance.  Mary and Nic start the night out in style with a very nontraditional first dance songs and an ode to one of my favorite movies, “Kiss the Girl”.  The entire scene was made complete with a guest joining in with an impromptu Scuttle impersonation in the background.  It set the fun tone for the entire night.  While some late night weddings I like to find a place to disappear into the shadows, this was a evening of pure entertainment.

Sweet nostalgia in form of a fragrance, the aroma of bay leaves filled the tent and instantly took Nic back to boyhood memories of his days in California.  I like to think that there will now be a new memory paired with this fragrant little leaf, a recollection of the day he and Mary started their happily ever after.

Zoo Wedding

August 23rd has historically been a popular date for weddings.  My parents were married 41 years ago on that date.  We have good friends who were wed on that date a couple years ago.  And last year, I was part of this rustically modern, rose gold infused, rainy yet perfect, party at the zoo.

This was my first daytime wedding and I really loved it.  Carrie and Brian were wed at noon, followed by cocktails and games on the covered patio, lunch in a modern ballroom suspended in the trees and then desserts, mingling and live music by Lindsey Lou and the Flatbelly’s.

Grand Rapids Wedding Photographers | Jamie & Sarah Photography | The Day's Design | Zoo Wedding

At approximately 11:30 that morning, I heard my first crack of thunder.  That’s not a happy noise a half hour prior to an outdoor wedding ceremony.  But one of the best part of hosting a wedding at The Bissell Treehouse is how you still get the feeling of an open air, lofty and wooded space with the protection of an awning. The slight drizzle turned into pouring rain, droplets made their way through the trees, the thunder boomed and Carrie walked down the aisle.  I think it was probably the most romantic rainstorm of all time.  The trees sang a chorus as Brian and Carrie pledged their love to one another.

Cinderella’s Proposal

0 · Aug 17, 2016 ·

My little sister just got married.  But before the merriment of “I do’s” there is a story to be told.  It’s a lovely story, a tale of two people who have fallen in love.  It’s a story of friendship and longing.  It’s story of patience and dreams that do come true.

A little birdie whispered in my ear that a certain someone was going to propose. The first step was finding the perfect ring. I found myself honored enough to assist with the jewelry shopping.  He chose a ring with the style name honored our grandmother, Margaret, and then had the design tweaked just a touch to make it fit my sister’s tastes.  It is a light blue sapphire (her birthstone) in a yellow gold setting and diamond accents.  It is stunning.

Each spring I like to put together an inspiration shoot.  It helps me to dust off my flowering skills and stir up some creative juices.  But as of late, I have found them to feel rather “empty”.  It seems like putting together these mock parties is wasteful, even frivolous.  And I was stuck looking for an idea.

The knowledge that Devin was going to propose was not new to me.  In fact, it was a secret that I had tucked away for nearly 6 months as my sister was searching for a new apartment, moving forward with her life and doing pretty much the opposite of what every newly engaged woman should be doing – all while we were off shopping for the perfect jewel.  But I kept quiet, my lips were sealed.  As I was mulling all of these things over and helping my soon to be brother-in-law brainstorm an amazing proposal, the idea struck me that we could combine both my inspiration shoot (which I had no ideas for) and his proposal (which he was also trying to make extremely memorable).

One of my sister’s all time favorite movies is the 1965 version of Roger & Hammerstien’s Cinderella –  and if you’re not familiar with that version, stop reading this and go watch it. It’s simply the best version of Cinderella known to man.  He had taken her to see a live version for her birthday, they had watched the movie together and it seemed like a very appropriate source of inspiration.

Under the guise of a small inspiration shoot, I asked my sister to model for me and proceeded to get her all dolled up.  She had a pampering salon day at Cheeky Strut, she picked out a beautiful gown at Spring Sweet and we made her feel like a princess, she needed a real life Cinderella moment. Now if only she had a pair of shoes…

Spring Sweet’s store closed and we made Justine walk down to the main store level to find her shoes.  The trip just so happened to take her down a beautiful wooden staircase which Spring and I adorned with blooming branches and greens.  On the treads of each step were gold calligraphy letter from Lief Design spelling out Will You Marry Me? “10 Minutes Ago” from Roger’s and Hammerstien’s Cinderella started playing.  And at the bottom of the stairs stood Prince Charming, holding her shoes and an engagement ring.

Cinderella’s Proposal Video

My little sister is getting married.

If you’re a longtime reader of this little blog, you’ll understand the impact of that one little sentence.  It symbolizes how love overcomes all.  It shows that we should never settle or give up hope.  I’m not going to dig up her dirty laundry, but rather I want to celebrate the future that lies before her.

To say that I was honored to be a part of her proposal story is an understatement.  I heard the news months before that all important question was posed and was privileged to be a part of the entire process.  Ring shopping, scheming and all the lovely details.

When I suggested that we have the entire occasion photographed, my sister’s soon-to-be fiancé was overjoyed with the idea.  It all snowballed from there with video, flowers and a beautiful dress. He wanted something memorable.  He wanted to create that perfect moment that she would never forget. He definitely accomplished that.

For me, bringing this to life was one the most stressful events I have ever taken on.  Everything had to be timed perfectly, from hair and makeup, to her dress, his arrival and the music cued in the background.  I rehearsed the scene over and over in my mind, but ultimately it was out of my control.

I couldn’t decide whether to share the story, the video or the photographs first.  I love it all.  They complete each other, just as Justine and Devin complete one another.  Today I’ll leave you with the scenery in motion from Katie Grace Photography & Videography.  It tells the tale in a way that words cannot.

In just two short weeks, they’re getting married.

There’s nothing more exciting to me than creating something beautiful and yet functional.  Creating something that celebrates real life the that moments that happen within it.   I think we need to vanquish the idea of the empty table.  No more heartless styled shoots.  We need to celebrate life as it happens.

My little sister is getting married. That’s exciting new all on it’s own accord.  But in addition, as I was schemeing about yet another “boring” styled shoot, I caught wind that this all important question was about to be popped.  That’s where my inspiration came from. The story suddenly fell into place and I had the honor of working along side her now fiance, to help create the fairytale proposal we all dream of.  And then it was featured on The Wedding Chicks.

You can see the feature here.  You can read about the inspiration and romance.  And I’ll certainly be sharing a few more of the behind the scences of being part of such a momentous occassion at at later date.

If you follow along on Instagram, you may have heard me reference the “FernGully” wedding.  This is it, this weekend after almost a year of planning (at least on my end).  We will play witness and be a part of the magic that’s created with a snazzy couple from Chicago brings their family and loved ones to celebrate and be wed in the woods of Northern Michigan.

And as one might expect when playing in the wood, there will be ferns.  Lots of them.  With touches of birch, art deco details and dinner and dancing with bay views.  Tones of blue, dusty lilac, charcoal and gold.  The anticipation for this day is almost too much.  I can hardly imagine how Crissie and Mike must feel knowing that tomorrow, they will become husband and wife, forever pledging their love to on another.

The sensual side of being a woman.  That’s what I’d really like to entitle this project.  It’s not about raunchy, racy photos of women in the nude but a reminder that we’re all beautiful and our own kind of sexy.   It’s about the lingering glance behind long lashes.   It’s the she simplicity of timeless lace.  It’s the flower in your hand that so desperately wants to be held.

Today women get so focused on power and not being left behind in a man’s shadow.  We’re out to prove that we’re strong and capable.  And while there’s nothing wrong with that, we also need to remember what makes us unique.  There’s a reason that we are different from men.  We get to do things and experience the world in a way that will forever remain a mystery to the male population.

This project with Ashley Slater reminds us of that.  It reminds us to embrace our inner and outer beauty.  We are feminine, classy and romantic beings.  And today you can see it through our feature over on 100 Layer Cake.

Willa June’s First Birthday

0 · May 24, 2016 ·

We moved into our new house the weekend of Willa June’s first birthday.  I still don’t think life has slowed down much since that day, but needless to say, we postponed our little birthday celebration for a couple weeks so we at least could set a table and might have a few things out of boxes.  Does a 1 year old really understand what’s going on or that we’re hosting a party for her?  I dare say, no.  First birthday parties are for the family, for the parents and brothers and sisters and we made it sort of a house warming party of sorts as well.

Even though I wanted this to be a very casual gathering, every time I host anything at my home, I always feel like there’s this pressure to meet certain expectations.  Everything needs to be lovely – the food, the decor, the presentation.  I don’t think every dinner party needs to be Pinterest worthy or anything, but I do plan parties for a living, after all.  I was as laid back with the planning of this one as physically possible for me.

It seemed perfectly appropriate to add a few baby fawn touches, for the baby girl who’s daddy works at a whitetail ranch.  From cutting out rice crispy treats to the sweet little touches on her invitations, we embraced the subtly of country life.

Real Weddings :: Becca & John

0 · May 19, 2016 ·

August has been on my mind a lot lately.  It really is a beautiful month to get married in, although it’s also a reminder that summer all too soon will be coming to an end.  Becca and John got married in August.  It was the most picturesque day.  The heat of summer was all around with the breezes to Lake Michigan there to keep it in balance.

St. Joseph played host the celebration, with the nuptials being held at his parent’s beachside residence that ended up only being partially completed by the big day.  But in the end, it didn’t matter that everything wasn’t perfect.  It didn’t matter that construction schedules ran behind.  What mattered was their love.  It was on this same property that he had proposed to Becca one year prior, in the town where both had spent the summers of their youth, so in the end, it really was perfect.

It was a Jewish ceremony with a custom made birch chuppah.  It was brought to my attention that the four open sides of a chuppah represent open doors and hospitality. Becca and John’s home will always be a place of welcome for friends and family. I love the tradition of being married under a chuppah all the more now.  And theirs was extra special as it was adorned with Becca’s grandfather’s pray shall.  Don’t forget to add just a little sentimental value to your wedding day.

After the ceremony, the celebration continued at The Heritage Center, where guests were wined and dined and danced the night away.  A live band, a cupcake truck and a sparkler exit complete with a pedicab driven by the best man for the getaway vehicle of choice.  Warm summer nights like these will live in our memories forever.

Mattie & Nick :: An Autumn Engagement

0 · May 11, 2016 ·

I remember this autumn day – not because I had much to do with the planning or even tagged along with Mattie and Nick’s engagement session, but rather because it was glorious.  It was the kind of October day that every bride dreams of.  Blue skies, heavenly temperatures and most majestic display of colors.

If I were planning my own wedding day in the autumn, I’d want it to look just like this.  It would be casual, with hints of burgundy and brown.  The soft glow of sunset would warm each and every photo and add that extra layer of romance.  And this field absolutely takes my breath away every time I see it, its so far beyond words I can’t even grasp a way to accurately describe it.

The evening would be treasured as we all would know that winter was on its way and the feeling of the warm sunshine upon your skin will become only a memory.  We should never take these days for granted, you never know what lies around the bend.

The custom dyed silk ribbons have been ordered.  The flowers are being prepared.  And in three day’s time, Mattie and Nick will be walking down the aisle in celebration for their love of one another.

Style Me Pretty Bouquet Breakdown :: Nautical Lake Michigan Wedding

0 · Mar 21, 2016 ·

Featured: Style Me Pretty | The Day's Design | Clary Pfeiffer Photography

Building a bridal bouquet is so much more than just gathering a handful of flowers and binding them with a silk ribbon. It’s an artful composition of design. It’s a process of sourcing the right ingredients, crafting the perfect recipe and then weeding out any blooms that don’t quite meet the cut. And then the labor of love truly begins.

I remember the day that Becca send me a gorgeous, white mounded bouquet with the caption “this would be a dream”. I would never copy another artist design – there are a number of logical reasons behind this, but for the most glaring of those is because I wouldn’t be true to myself, I would be relying on someone else’s creativity and it might actually rob not only the other artist, but also the bride of having a piece that’s a one of a kind treasure that’s designed solely for her.  The bridal bouquet is an artist’s floral interpretation of each bride, their story written in flowers.

So I asked, “What is it that you love so much about the bouquet?” After a little thought, she determined that it was the way that it was white, and yet had the tiniest tinge of pink scattered amongst the petals. It was so subtle and barely noticeable, and yet, there it was.

Becca was a very elegant and chic bride, so her bouquet was designed to be a reflection of her. It was just a touch nautical, perfect for a beach wedding. The blue hint in the greenery blended with Lake Michigan’s shoreline and the wild dune grass which prevalent all around. Then a couple anemones were added to tie in the nautical navy of the men’s suits. I chose to make the clematis and its silky smooth petals, the star of the garden rose infuse bouquet. This provided a resting place of the eye to naturally fall and also nodded to Becca’s appreciation of simple, clean lines.

Nancy & Andrew’s Love Story

0 · Mar 2, 2016 ·

Every day has a story.  I don’t just mean wedding days, or fancy celebration times but literally every single day.  Some tales are bit boring while others are a bit more momentous.  Some stories are disregarded by the next morning.  Some have a narrative that would rather be forgotten while others want to be relived continuously throughout time.

I don’t know the number of days or how many stories Nancy and Andrew have shared together.  I don’t know how he proposed or what their wedding will look like.  But I can surmise that their tale will have a happy ending.  I can imagine that the day that Ashley followed them around Downtown Grand Rapids on this crisp autumn morning was a happy one, one that will remain in their hearts for years to come.

When an author writes a book, they are then tasked to find the perfect artist or illustrator to portray what the imagination cannot visualize on its own.  In the same way, a photographer must tell the story of love, of engagement and then on to the happily ever after – the wedding day.

I will only play a small role in the overall plot of their lives.  I’m merely an extra in the background or a set designer, supplying a couple props for the day, whether it’s a halo for engagement photos, a flower for a special occasion or a cascading showpiece for a bride on her wedding day. Rooftop Engagment Session | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyDowntown Grand Rapids Engagment Session | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyRomantic Grand Rapids Engagment Session | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyGarden Engagment Session | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyBlack Tulle Skirt | Romantic Grand Rapids Engagment Session | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyDowntown Grand Rapids Engagment Session | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyDowntown Engagment Session | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyEngagment Session | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyPink and White Bridal Bouquet | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyRomantic Engagment Session | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyPink and White Bridal Bouquet | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyBoho Engagment Session | Flower Crown | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyRomantic Engagment Session | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyRomantic Engagment Session | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyGarden Engagment Session | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater PhotographyPhotography: Ashley Slater Photography | Floral Design: The Day’s Design  | Location: Downtown Grand Rapids

When people ask me how many weddings I do a year, I would rather tell them how many love stories I’ve had the privilege of being a part of. I’m merely helped set the stage, designed the set or illustrated a page where the romance will come to life.

A Lakeside Proposal

0 · Feb 1, 2016 ·

February 1st.  This time of year is grey, speckled with storms of white and cabin fever has officially set in.  I want to go outside and play.  The wonder of the holidays is long gone and the newness of January has faded away.  The only glimmer of celebration yet to behold is the fact that engagement season isn’t completely behind us, the next couple of weeks will wrap up the wave of romantic questions and as Valentine’s day is actually on a weekend this year which I think will increase the number of diamonds purchased and over the top proposals.

In early autumn, I put together a little engagement story of my own.  I thought about where I would do it, how I would want it captured and of course what I would be wearing if I were the one asking that most important question.  Wedding Paper Divas asked that we include a few of their save the dates and invitations in the storyline and sometimes something so simple can really bring the rest of the details together.

So as the days grew shorter, the autumn air greeted us with a crisp refreshment and the world began to take on a golden brown hue.  We welcomed September rains, velvet touches and evenings illuminated by candlelight.  With mixed metallics and touches of grey blue, we imagined a lakeside story filled with sequins and wheat grass, where rustic meets elegance and love was surely to thrive. The perfect place to start to the journey to “I do”. Photography: Bradley James Photography | Event & Floral Design: The Day’s Design | Venue: Clifford Lake Inn  |  Invitations/Save the Dates: Wedding Paper Divas |  Calligraphy: Lief Designs  |  Ring box: Lumbertacks  |  Dress: Adrianna Papell |  Cake: Pastry Chef Dana Lucas of Clifford Lake Inn

Olivia and Carter are just the dreamiest couple.  While this was staged and not the actual moment he proposed, they did recently get engaged and I get to help floralize their real wedding this summer.  Olivia will be a stunning bride!

If you’re seeking inspiration for an amazing proposal (or helping to point your beau in the right direction) you can always suggest that he doesn’t have to go it alone.  Perhaps hire a photographer, get in touch with a wedding planner or guide him towards wedding professionals who won’t take over the creative process, but rather enhance it and help make the moment even more memorable.
