Accent Flowers

It’s no secret that I love the art of floral arranging. I can’t seem to get enough of designing with pretty blooms and I sincerely hope that this always holds true and never becomes a burden or a chore because it is my “job”.

While making big, lush arrangements is one of my favorite things ever I think they’ve become somewhat expected when you come to an event. People expect to see the massive urns overflowing with lush greenery and delicate roses at the front of the ceremony. They look for the floral centerpieces and ooh and ahh over the bride’s romantic bouquet. In today’s world, these are “standard” pieces of wedding décor.

Sometimes it’s the simple anybody-can-do-it details that capture me the most. It doesn’t have to be extravagant or over the top but rather tastefully done and even a little unexpected can have a huge impact. Adding a couple leftover sprigs of green to the cake table, having a small simple bud vase with a single colored bloom by the guests book or having a couple of extra flowers on standby to photograph with your accessories or wedding invites. Often these details that we find ourselves swooning over really aren’t so glamourous, they were just staged well and someone knew how to accessorize.

The picture above (so beautifully captured by Heather Cisler Photography) showcases the most gorgeous white ranunculus, which just adds a whole new level of pretty to the sparkly bar set up. The sweet little ranunculus is the most perfect accent flower. At times details like this are thought out and other times, I will completely admit, they were just a spur of the moment inspiration, which again is why you hire artists and vendors who you trust to make your special day even more than you ever imagined. It’s also a great way to add a little extra romance or natural feeling to a party that might not necessarily call for floral centerpieces or showpieces.

My philosophy is simple – every flower should be showcased and loved, leave no flowers behind.

The Industry Newbies

At one point in life we were all new at something. Whether it was our first time riding a bike, first day of school or the day we officially set up shop and opened our doors for business. After spending over 10 years in the hospitality business, the past 5 years focused mainly on weddings and events and officially naming my business back in 2011 – I can’t help but still feel like a newbie.

And to the local wedding natives who made the West Michigan wedding industry what it is today, I am. To others, I’m looked up to – which seems really strange to say, but I’m sent messages on a regular basis regarding my path to making it to where I am today. They’re asking for advice from ME, the little newbie who is trying to make something of herself.

What I think it really comes down to is perspective. Sometimes being a newbie and shaking things up a bit can be a really good, good thing. While other times it’s translated a little more as “unexperienced” or “she doesn’t really know what she’s doing”. Or in my case, it’s a little bit of both. Let’s be perfectly honest here, if you have it all 100% completely figured out either you’re borderline boring or you’re not challenging yourself to take enough risks.

It’s with all of this in mind that I choose to support new businesses. I like to collaborate and take risks offering newer professionals the chance to shine. Sometimes the results are lacking, and sometimes they’re pure magic. But if you never give a person the chance, then you’ll never really know the outcome.

Does that mean you should be hiring the industry “newbies” for you wedding, one of the most important days of your life? Friends, do be hesitant. Look for recommendations, experienced vendors can truly make or break your wedding day. I would advise not using a full group of individuals who have little experience, however sprinkling one or two new vendors throughout your team might be refreshing. After all, if no one would have ever taken a chance on me, I would still be sitting here daydreaming about planning my first wedding.

Bloom the Workshop :: September Edition

Well my extremely talents friends are at it again, this past September they brought Bloom the Workshop back to West Michigan and once again I got to be a part. (You can read all about the first edition here.) I’m not going to share all the gorgeous workshop details or the behind the scenes but rather I’m going to skip right to the good part, the styled shoot portion.

With fall beginning to close in, the florals were inspired by shades of berry and orange, with subtle touches of pink set against a bold black and white pattern. A little modern, a little rustic and completely chic describes the tablescape that Michaela designed. It was my job to adorn not only the tabletop but also provide the models with gorgeous blooms. 2 centerpieces, 2 bouquets a boutonniere and a whole lot of pretty made this shoot come to life at Rockford’s Hydrangea Blu Barn.

Those dresses? Aren’t they just amazing, I wish I had the back to pull that off. And the cockscomb in centerpiece number 2 is the biggest piece of locals cockscomb I have ever seen! I can’t wait to see what the these talented girls do for Bloom in 2015!

Simple: Defined

What makes a wedding simple? I find myself circling around this term again as yet another bride has used this word as a description of her ideal wedding.

I spent almost 15 minutes fluffing and re-fluffing, and making sure a tablecloth at last Saturday’s wedding fell with the perfect drape. I wanted it to look as though it had just been thrown in place with such grace and ease. But the fact is that simple and effortless look took a lot of time and care.

As an adjective, Dictionary.com offers 7 different definitions for the word simple. Seven!! That doesn’t seem “simple” to me. Let’s narrow this down a bit, let’s focus on just a couple of those definitions.

Easy to understand, deal with, use

Weddings for the most part are easy to understand. Most people have a general understanding of what is to happen during the wedding – there’s a bride, a groom and at the end of the day they became a united couple, usually with some sort of celebration or reception after.

Easy to deal with? Well, that point could be argued a bit. That can depend on family dynamics, individual desires, as well as multiple other factors. Some find planning a wedding stressful, some find it fun but I can almost guarantee that at some point during the process, even if just for a fleeting moment, the person planning is not finding their day easy to deal with.

Not elaborate or artificial, plain

I would wager this is the definition that most people think of when they tell me that they’re looking for a simple wedding. Think back to that perfectly flowing linen and how much time it actual took to perfect. Sometimes a plain wedding might mean a simple flower crown rather than a stuffy, traditional veil. Perhaps you’re thinking of a table overflowing with candles rather than packed floral arrangements. However consider how “unsimple” this really is. For the floral designer, you wearing a veil is much easier. Likewise, placing one flower arrangement on a table can be much easier than washing dozens of candle holders, hauling them to the reception site, keeping the flames lit and then taking them down and packing them up again at the end of the night. Consider who you want the wedding to be simple for.

Not ornate or luxurious, unadorned

Luxurious is a word that can have many definitions in itself. But I think one of the main misconceptions here is that if a wedding isn’t luxurious, filled with sky high floral arrangements and oodles of draping, it doesn’t feel stuffy and over the top, then it is simple and possibly lower budget. However, luxury comes in all shapes and forms. Sometimes it can be earthy and rustic. Sometimes it can be natural and easygoing. A luxury is really just something that isn’t one of life’s basic necessities, meaning that a wedding reception itself is really a luxury.

So what is it about your celebration that you really want to keep simple? Hiring awesome vendors to help you will simplify the day for you. Choosing an open, outdoor venue keeps the mood casual and unassuming. However, please remember that expensive blooms can be arranged in a causal way. Extra details, while “simple” are still extra work. Keeping your style informal does not mean it going to be any easier planning. Fussy doesn’t always mean expensive and inexpensive doesn’t mean carefree.

The tablescape pictured above seems unpretentious, informal and yet chic. It took lots of planning and was not easy dragging it into the countryside setting. Yet some might consider this a “simple” set-up.

Telling Your Vendors “No”

Wedding inquiries for me seem to go in spirts. One week my inbox will be flooded and then I might have a drought for the next three. And while I’d love to turn all those inquiries into clients, it just doesn’t happen – I’ve never done the math, but I’d wager to guess that over 50% of those I never hear a peep back from. But it’s that other 50%, the ones that follow up, have questions or even take the time to meet with me that I’d really like to address. Some of these lovely ladies share their wedding fantasies, their dreams, expectations, so much of their life stories and then…

Silence.

I hear nothing more.

So today’s post is all about telling your vendors “no.”

Be Honest. If you’re shopping around and talking to several vendors in my category, that’s perfectly fine. You’ve probably never planned a wedding before and so you might want to explore all your options. You definitely need to find the right fit for you. But let me know your intensions right up front. Let me know if you’re trying to decide if you even want a wedding planner or not. Let me know if you have meetings scheduled with 3 other florists/designers as well. I promise I won’t be offended and you don’t have to share their names.

Be Realistic and Respectful. Enter that first consult with reasonable expectations, most times it’s more of a “meet and greet” not a wedding planning session. I put food on my table by providing wedding services. Please don’t just inquire and consult with me to see how many free tips you can get me to share. Please don’t ask me to draw up a design proposal or hand you a list of recommended vendors for your day if you haven’t signed a contract and sent a deposit.

Tell Me No (bonus points for a brief explanation). Your wedding is all about YOU. While I may have wanted to be a part of your celebration so bad I could taste it, chances are if you decided that I wasn’t a good fit – I felt that too. Some people just click. At the end of the day, my main goal is to make you happily married and sometimes that goal is better achieved by me not being a part of your celebration. But don’t be afraid to tell me that. Please don’t leave me hanging, wondering what happened to you. Was I too serious or silly? Were my ideas a little too far out there for you? Was it my pricing? Telling me “no” is great but if you can give me a little insight as to why, well that helps me better myself and could also help future brides as well.

It would not be physically possible for me to be a part of every wedding that inquired with me. Even if I really loved everything you said, sometimes it’s a relief to have a weekend off. But remember that really great first date you had with no follow up phone call? Sometimes I feel like that. Don’t make me feel like Josie Grossy. I’m a big girl, just tell me the truth.

Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

I adore my photographer friends. The amount of artistic talent, stamina and imagination it takes in their profession is truly admirable. It is because of their camera knowledge and skill that my work is able to shine and I appreciate each and every one that works with me and shares pictures from events that we have worked together.

I also read several photography blogs on a somewhat regular basis. While I personally have no desire to be a photographer, I like to see their perspective of the wedding industry and always take note on how I can better myself as well. It is not uncommon for me though, as I’m skimming through their blogs to come across a post or comment about their work being either credited improperly or someone else using their work as their own. In addition, with the increasing popularity of Instagram (which is probably my very favorite social media), I often see rants about how important it is to credit their pictures on this platform as well.

While I feel that they have every right to get into a tizzy over this issue, I can’t help but want to cry out and share my side of the story. What about the other artist? Shouldn’t they be credited properly too? After all, it’s their bouquet in the picture, their dress, their makeup, their hairstyle or calligraphy… and the list can really go on and on.

I do everything I can to properly credit people’s work. I get a little upset when I see a picture of a really lovely floral arrangement that I’ve created captioned with only a photographer credit – which happened again just this morning as I was mindlessly scrolling through Instagram. And I personally struggle with calling the person out on it or not, especially when the caption on the photos is about how lovely the bouquet is. Why is the photographer always the main focus? Is it because their voice is so much stronger or is it something else.

So where do we draw the line? Should every picture we see on this grand old web be captioned with 20 different vendor credits? Or do we just pick the main one and people can dig for more? Why do I see so many photographer’s wedding posts stating the location of the wedding, but nothing else? I want to know who catered it, who her dress is by and who created that fabulous cake. This is our portfolio, our “word of mouth” marketing and how we make ourselves known throughout this world wide web. Shouldn’t we all give credit where credit is due?

Styled Shoot Party :: Just a Glimpse

There’s been an idea brewing inside of me for awhile now and it’s all based on this notion that styled shoots, while absolutely gorgeous, are also a bit of a waste. I enjoy working without limitations and being able to create whatever I envision. Plus the collaboration between vendors can be a really beautiful form of creative expression. But at the end of each day I can’t help but feel that I just set up an amazing tablescape, pieced together what was sure to be an over-the-top amazing soiree and now I have to tear it down, without anyone really appreciating it for months to come.

So last month I took a new approach to the “styled shoot”. Rather than wasting the beauty and hospitality, I invited guests to be a part. They were guests that I didn’t know, people nominated by others who needed a little love and something extra pretty in their lives. The results were more than I could have ever imagined.

I’ve yet to sit down with Ashely Slater to browse through all of what are sure to be incredible memories from the night but I can’t wait. I want to remember the evening that I took a risk and invited complete strangers to a dinner party. In time, I will also share with you the inspiration, the execution, as well as the hiccups that happened along the way as this was not an easy party to pull off. But I can promise you, it was worth it!

Wedding Wardrobes

I am to be a bridesmaid in an upcoming wedding. While I’ve been a bridesmaid several other times, this is the first time that I’ve ever been asked to shop and purchase a legitimate “bridesmaids” dress, which is proving to be a bit more daunting than anticipated. Previously, I had simply been handed a color swatch or I’ve been told to go pick out a black dress. Simple enough.

When it comes to bridesmaids dresses today, it seems that anything goes. You can match, you cannot match. You can all wear the same fabric, length or color or shop completely independent of one another. It’s really the bride’s choice, right?

When was the last time you went to the mall, picked out a complete outfit for your friend and made her wear it on an important night out on the town, without her ever trying it on first and agreeing. You’d make sure the top hugged her curves just right and the shoes were killer (and comfortable!) You might shop together, but you wouldn’t force her to wear something she didn’t like, right?

I was once a bride. I totally thought it was within my rights to dictate what the members of my wedding party wore. And it was my right, to a certain extent. They want to feel comfortable and beautiful too, even if the day isn’t revolving around them.

So how do you make sure everyone feels comfortable and the bride still gets what she wants? Here are a couple tips for you brides:

Analyze what’s really important to you about what the members bridal party wear. Is it the color? The style? The length? The fabric? The overall look? Pick one or two of these things to really be the focus.

Determine the formality level. Are you hosting an extremely formal or traditional affair? Then everyone matching might be really important to you. If it’s there’s more of a casual, laid back theme, they you might reflect this through your wedding party’s wardrobe choosing patterned dresses or allowing the girls to mix and match.

Consider the weather. If there’s a chance it might be chilly, allowing the girls to wear a floor length gown or tights/nylons might be greatly appreciated, even if the wedding itself doesn’t take place outdoors, there’s a good chance some of the pictures might. Photographer’s love outdoor lighting.

Speaking of photographers – how do you want your photos to look? Deeper colors can be really pretty and make a bold statement. Pastel and neutral tones make give photos a softer more romantic look, blending more with their backdrops bringing focus to the picture as a whole not just the brighter pieces.

Study your surroundings. Clothing should not only coordinate with other décor elements of your day but also locations where you wish to have portraits taken. That cute little red barn might seem like the perfect backdrop for your wedding photos but maybe not if you’re ladies are wearing hot pink dresses.

Budget. Ughh…. I feel like I’m constantly bringing up that nasty word. But being a bridesmaid can be an expensive endeavor – there’s always more to buy than just shoes and a dress. If you have your heart set on a pricy dress option, see if less expensive brands might have a similar option or there’s someone you know who can afford it, as her to wear it and the other ladies to purchase something that compliments her, but do be tactful please.

Be aware of different body shapes. Dresses rarely come in a one-size-fits-all option. At first glance it might seem like your wedding party is all pretty similarly size. But upon further exploration, you might determine that Anna has a long torso and zero curves, Jane is extra busty and Gabby has legs that just don’t quit. The translation – while technically they can all wear the same dress, only one or two are actually going to look good in it.

It’s really a balancing act – trying to make everyone happy, with the bride just slighter happier. That’s how you choose the wedding day wardrobes. Do you have other ideas that should be considered? Saying “Pish Posh”

It was around this time back in 2011 that I had my first paid floral order. It was a small order, 3 arrangements for a casual, catered dinner party. Needless to say, I was excited.

I researched and schemed. I gathered information and I was going to make these arrangements be the most beautiful flowers anyone had ever seen. Being as it was September, I choose to add some autumn hints, with browns and burgundy, a few sunflowers and some seeded eucalyptus. One large mantel display and two centerpieces later, I was almost pleased with myself. It was missing something…

So off I went for a walk. The perfect mix of green and yellow is what I sought and I found it easily within my reach, right in the comfort of my own yard. Now they were perfect. The foraged greens added the perfect amount of extra texture and completed my color palette.

Upon arrival with my arrangements, the secretary in charge of the dinner did not share my enthusiasm for the foraged greenery I was so proud of. In fact, other than some pleasantries about how nice it was to meet me, the only comment I heard about my flowers was “these greens, they look like they’re dead”.

I was mortified. I thought I had found a way for me to create; I thought I was stepping outside of the comforts and confines of a traditional floral shop and perhaps even finding my niche. I had always picked roadside blooms and other treasures for my garden, I didn’t see why I couldn’t do it even if I were selling the arrangements. And so I let one negative comment stop my vision of becoming a floral designer. Fear and judgment took over.

A year passed before I played with more flowers. And even then it was mostly for my own viewing pleasure. Her voice was always there, in the back of my head questioning my every move, every flower I choose and leaf I picked.

Today I would like to say “Pish Posh” to her. Her who had the audacity to question my art and pass criticism my way. Today I understand that negative criticism will always be lurking around the corner but I will press forward, maybe learning from my mistakes and maybe just taking it with a grain of salt.

“The voice you believe will determine the future you experience.” — I saw this quote last night and thought it was so fitting.

The above bouquet was 100% foraged from my garden and might include a couple of “weeds” from my yard, but I think it’s kind of lovely in its own spunky way. The picture was captured by Hetler Photography.

All in the Details

As wedding season seems to have flown past, I’ve observed many tips and trips simply by trial and error that I’m really excited to share with you in the upcoming months. One of the biggest things that has been on my mind lately though is the details. You know, all those agonizing little pieces of the wedding day that you spend hour and hours debating, contemplating and Pinteresting.

I love hearing what a bride has in store or coming up with creative ways to help a bride display items, bring some personality into her day and tie all those final touches together. We’re talking ribbon selections for the bouquets, escort cards, linen, favors, hankies, bowties, shoes and the list goes on and on. Weddings are full of details. It’s pretty rare for a bride who has hired me not to care about these things. The memory of these details is sure to fade, do you want to remember?

With the majority of my clients this year being partial planning or floral only, I haven’t had the opportunity to assist many of my couples with selecting their photographers, which is usually one of the first vendors hired. Interestingly enough, the photographers hired aren’t always ones that love details as much as the brides. Different photographers have different styles and focus more on various aspects of the wedding day.

So how do you hire a photographer that loves details? Look at a photographer’s portfolio – are they capturing the cute signs the flowergirls are carrying down the aisle? Can you get a sense of the story of the day from their galleries or do they focus more on portrait and candid photography? Sure they might have a couple of ring shots in their portfolio, but do they schedule a time to get pictures of the entire ceremony or reception before the guests have been seated, drinks have been spilled and flowers have wilted? Are they going to arrive at the reception beforehand to see the escort card display? Are they arriving early enough in the wedding day to get pictures of your gorgeous shoes before you’ve walked through the grass? Do they have a second shooter to help capture some of these extra shots? How balanced are their wedding albums?

It’s completely unrealistic to list every detail that you want photographed but if you want the majority of them captured, then be sure to make these wishes known. You’ve spent time and money on these pieces of your day, so why not have them captured in an artful way? Waiting

Waiting. I fear we live in a world where that concept is lost. It’s old fashioned not to have instant gratification. It’s rare not to have something new in your hands moments after discovering that you want it.

On Monday, I was sent of preview of what was to be posted on Once Wed this week. It was all about waiting. I have waited since May to see the results of the photo shoot which I had a very small role in producing along with my other Team Flower girls. And it was worth the wait.

“In ancient Hebrew culture when a bride and groom were engaged, there was a time of separation, of waiting. Rather than planning every detail of their wedding day together, the groom needed to leave his bride at her home and go to his father’s house to build a room for he and his bride to live in when they married. She never knew exactly when her groom would return, but she trusted him and waited. This trust brought peace and rest to her mind. In that time she prepared herself for his arrival, fully confident he would return at just the right time.”

The idea of not knowing when something will happen, especially something as big as a wedding, is so foreign. I feel as though I would explode from the lack of knowledge and constantly living on the edge of my seat, thinking every moment I needed to be prepared, at my best and completely ready.

I must admit, patience is not a strong suit of mine. But I feel lately that I’ve been sitting here waiting for something – something great, I just don’t know what yet. I’ve left my blog full of silence this month and I’ve just waited for the perfect thing to share. And while my month may have been filled with busy, it was also full of questions. So what’s next? What exactly am I waiting for?

Wedding Color Palettes

There’s this old way of thinking that some brides still fall prey to when it comes to choosing wedding colors. Pick 2 colors that you like and that go together. 2 colors – that’s all you get. For everything. Flowers, linens, dresses, ties – everything!

I don’t know where this originated from the 80’s or 90’s or maybe sometime before – all I can say is it was long before I became a wedding planner and I remember thinking this rule was true when I was a little girl playing dress up. Friends, I think it’s time that we abolish this rule FOREVER!

Actually, I know this rule is on it’s way out the door, no doubt. But I still come across the occasional bride that tells me she’s having these two colors, end of story. So you’re dreaming of a blue and white wedding. That does not mean everything has to be blue and white. I will not dye flowers into an unnatural shade of blue for you. It’s just not meant to be. Consider adding some natural purple blooms, a pop of blue thistle and maybe a couple of white buds with some greenery. Create a color story. Consider not focusing exclusively on the colors themselves, but the overall feeling of the event.

And then consider you’re space. Like it or not, the room, venue, or area you decide to get married in, take pictures in, and dance the night away in will have a HUGE impact on the overall color scheme and the mood that is set with your event. That hideous burgundy carpet – you will notice it. Find a way to make it work and blend with your scheme. Sometime ignoring it will make it stand out even more. It’s like those pictures where one of these things is not like the other…

Trust your designers to make everything flow together and be open to slightly “outside of the box ideas”. They know the touches that make the biggest impact and have an excellent eye for color – or at least I like to think I do! Colors just make me happy and I want you to be happy too!

Destine to Bloom

I think it’s really funny how life turns out sometimes. I mean you head down one path and completely turn and do a 180, finding were meant to be on another all along. And the answers really were simple, and right there in front of you – you just never knew it.

My great grandma was a lover of flowers. She had beautiful gardens and knew every variety. Sadly I just recently learned this and I never had the opportunity to meet her. But here I am, unknowingly following in her footsteps. It’s like all along this journey was there, it’s in my blood, and all I had to do was reach out and accept it.

The New Brand Conundrum

I’ve been working with Anchor & Ink on a new logo design for a couple months now. Chelsi oozes talent – her painting, her lettering, it’s all simply fabulous.

I approached her because I don’t feel my current logo, and complete branding/business for that matter, truly represent me. Now I know I’ve rambled on before about my style, etc. but it’s hard sometimes to dig deep and recognize who you really are and what you really want. And on top of that, I think who you are evolves over time – a time that might be shorter than you think.

I have never been a fan of pink. I mean it’s cute, fun and at times romantic but it’s never really been my cup of tea. But for some reason a couple years ago I was crushing on it, hard. So I have pink business cards and doses of it scattered throughout my website. Did I deviate from who I am or was there a time where I actually was that person? I think my old self is starting to creep back and suddenly the only place I want to see pink is in flowers and on my baby girl. But I’m still very open to working and creating with the color as it seems to keep sneaking into my events. Blush and gold seems to be every bride’s fantasy and I’m perfectly alright with that.

So where does that leave me? Well that’s a question I’ve been asking for a while now. Designing a logo is hard. I’m a difficult client. Hmph.

This is my current branding, which I am reevaluating after much much much soul searching. I’m digging deep to figure out who I am and who I want this business of mine to represent. But in the end here’s what I’ve discovered when it comes to marketing — I’d rather go play with flowers!

An Evening in the Orchard

Spring brings a magical time when blooms are all about. I love finding excuses to drive by the orchards in all their flowering glory. The cherry orchards might just be my favorite as they remind me of my childhood trips to Grandma’s house but just about any flowering tree will bring a smile my my face.

This year I promised myself that I would have more pictures taken. I want to capture moments in life before they fade away. I want to remember Gretta’s spiky pigtails, how she hated to wear shoes (but loved to carry them around) and the way her eyes light up every time she sees her daddy.

Back in May these two things collided. My friend Kellie so graciously offered to spend a evening in a blossoming apple orchard and help me preserve a piece of my life. Thank you Kellie. Now the challenge is to pick my favorites to hang on my walls.

Making It Work

I’ve been working on several design plans lately. I love it when a bride comes to me full of the most perfect ideas you could ever imagine. Everything from the wedding party attire to the venue to the cutest wedding party favors all match and flow seamlessly, making her a dream to work with and my job rather simple. Then there’s the bride who has a couple ideas, but really needs me to help get the creative juices flowing. That’s why you hire me – because I’m pretty creative. When you can feel her excitement from across the planning table I know I’m doing my job and the excitement I feel is beyond words.

However sometimes it doesn’t end there. Sometimes she continues planning and things go astray. And then there’s the situation that the planning that has already been put into motion really isn’t the direction that you think the event should take and she just can’t see how you’re trying to eat pizza and oranges together in the same meal.

This is where the challenge begins. This is where I have to remind myself that there’s a reason that she hired me. She hired me to make it all work, to make it come together and make it beautiful. I have to find a way to bridge that gap and bring her dream to life.

The problem is we’re so overwhelmed with images and ideas – Pinterest, wedding blogs and various other sources – that we just want it all. And we want it to be amazing, budget friendly and stress free (I mean, you might as well, we’re already living in a fantasy).

Have you ever considered hiring a designer just to unjumble your brain? They can help you focus on your priorities and come up with a plan that is truly you and not what every other Pinterest bride is doing. Maybe mason jars (although sometimes inexpensive), might not be the right “thrifty route” for you. Psst… I have some other fun ideas that are just as cheap, err… cost effective. Talking to an expert – whether it’s a wedding planner, florist, designer etc. before committing to designs and ideas is always a great idea. Who knows, they might have a more inventive, charming or creative idea or perhaps you were on the right path all along. And maybe we can just find a way to make it all work.

Bloom the Workshop :: Recap

I used to think that learning should take place in school. I thought that to get a good education, you needed to attend a good school or college. At least that’s what was always preached to me, so why shouldn’t I believe it? I was taught that in order to succeed in life, you needed a bachelor’s degree and possibly more. And if you didn’t invest in your education, you were destine for failure.

My thinking has shifted away from what my 18 year old self once thought. I definitely had those “why do I need to know this?” moments in school, but for the most part just sucked it up and went to class every day believing that this is what would help me achieve my goals and get a good job. In fact, the thought never occurred to me that perhaps I could teach myself a thing or two, or I could learn from other business people or attend small workshops.

I now think that it’s determination more than anything that will help you succeed in life. I learned language skills, basic business principles and various other things in college which I’m sure impact me more than I realize. I believe that college teaches you how to interact in the “real world”. However pushing yourself and being open to new ideas and learning from one another is HUGE. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals and people who inspire you – you will absorb so much.

About a month ago I was able to play a small role in bringing Bloom the Workshop to West Michigan. I supplied some super pretty blooms and did a little behind the scenes work for Ashley and Michaela and helped bring their creative vision to life. They are the type of people I like to surround myself with. And the best part is, they want to inspire, they want to teach and they want to see you succeed. I was able to watch them teach 30 ladies about business, blogging, social media, styling, design, photography and life. And I left inspired. I wasn’t even an attendee!

So while I want to share with you some of the pretty that took place that day, I also want you to consider investing in yourself, your creative side and your business. There’s always something more to learn.

One of my favorite parts of the workshop was how interactive it was. Ashley and Michaela didn’t give give the attendees a bunch a information and send them on their merry ways, but they also planned a time to put that information and new skills to the test. The afternoon consisted of a styled shoot portion, which believe it or not, is a great way showcase work in many industries, not just the wedding inspiration shoots we’re so accustom to seeing. From styling papers to models to flowers and beyond, participants photographed and played with different designs, poses, locations and lighting.

Wet Weather Weddings

If you’re planning an outdoor affair it’s likely that the thought of rain has crept into your mind. Or at least it probably should have. This summer seems to be extra wet, and while I love not having to water my garden and how my lawn is remaining green, it does stress me when it comes to wedding planning.

I’m guilty of saying “the show must go on” and just going for it – I can talk a big game. So we get a little wet, we’re not going to melt. Brides with umbrellas are cute. There are some fabulous opportunities for unique photos. I can look at the glass as half full, for sure.

And I simply adore outdoor parties.

The start of wedding season for The Day’s Design was a drizzly one despite the weatherman’s positive outlook on the day. In fact, we later found out that just a few miles away, they didn’t even receive a drop of rain. That’s crazy Michigan weather for you.

We stayed optimistic throughout the setting up process. We kept moving and utilized our tarps and other coverings. And we pulled though. But it wasn’t as easy as glamorous pictures are sure to show. The heat and humidity cause your clothing to simply stick to you. Papers were soggy and limp. My rain boots rubbed on my toes. There were bugs. And every time we thought the skies were clearing, fresh droplets were released from the clouds. How the bride remained staying so fresh and beautiful is beyond me.

I don’t share this to complain about the wedding day. I simply would like to point out the comfort or perhaps discomfort you and your guests might endure should you decide to move forward with an outdoor ceremony on a rainy day. I wish to express the importance of having a backup plan – although I do understand how hard it can be to utilize that, unless the day is calling for monsoon conditions. But grounds become muddy and even after the showers have stopped, the canopy of trees above us still produced sprinkles every time there was even the slightest breeze.

You should also consider the policies other vendors have regarding rain. Some equipment cannot get wet – cameras, sound systems, etc. And how will the rental company feel if their upholstered lounge seating is returned saturated? Are you risking damage deposits and extra fees? Are there wedding details you’re going to have to give up if the rain doesn’t let up?

Even with the weather, it was beautiful start to the summer 2014 wedding season– the way the light shown through mist in the woods that day was breathtaking. I can’t wait to share more peaks from Kelly Sweet Photography. And after seeing this picture, I’m not sure I would change a thing – including the weather forecast.

Team Flower Workshop :: The Bouquet

It’s funny looking back at my time in North Carolina. I felt like I was surrounded with beauty every single moment of the day, the number of flowers so easily accessible to us was slightly overwhelming and the gorgeous mountainside scenery really did steal your breathe away. Then I received the pictures back of my work and realized that I really only made two portfolio arrangements. But that was enough friends, they are two of my favorite pieces ever.

There was an entire day focused around personal flowers. From boutonnieres to bouquets to flower crowns, I love them all. I think we should make wearing fresh flowers a part of our everyday fashion, don’t you agree? By far, the bridal bouquet is always my favorite decor item of the wedding. It crosses the line of being an accessory and a decoration and is always by the bride’s side. It holds the most photographed flowers of the day and I want the bride to love it forever.

When creating a bridal bouquet, I often find myself standing in front of a mirror, envisioning myself in a white gown and carrying this lovely bunch of blooms. It was so fun to see that others do the same, there was a mirror available for just this purpose. I chose of of the most vibrant magenta peonies I have ever seen, along with a paler, tree peony friend and orange kumquats. This is was spoke to me and I built my bouquet around them adding smoke bush, mock orange and tulips. And the icing on the cake was the long, elegant, flowing silk ribbons that cascaded down from the flowers letting the colors live on a little longer.

And then we all climbed the largest hill (or mountain — not sure of the correct term here!) I have ever climbed, in the middle of a cow pasture, and handed our blooms off to the beautiful bride model Kelly had waiting for us. Even to watch the reaction on her face as she took the bouquet from my hand was enough to make my heart go pitter patter.

My legs burned and I may or may not have stepped in a cow pie, but it doesn’t matter because I would easily endure these “hardships” for any of my brides, sacrificing my own clothing for the most picture perfect moments, lighting and blooms. Because that’s what a wedding planner does – in that moment it’s not about me, it’s about making someone else’s wedding day dreams come true.

Team Flower Workshop :: Philosophy Flowers, Boone NC

It seems I’ve been on the road a lot lately — quick trips to Holland, wedding planning in Northport and Maple City and then the every day travels throughout Grand Rapids. And while I love traveling, sometimes it’s just good to be in the comfort of your own home office (where’s there’s actually internet and phone service readily available!)

But by far one of my favorite trips this spring was down to Boone, North Carolina where I had an unbelievably amazing flower experience with Kelly Perry, Heather Payne and so many lovely new flower friends. As crazy as it might sound, the experience was life changing. It brought on a whole new appreciation for my surroundings, love of nature and showed me what new bonds and friendships can be formed over something as simple as the love of flowers.

If you haven’t noticed already, beautiful blooms are becoming a much bigger part of The Day’s Design. I have teased myself with the idea that I could be a floral designer for years now, but I now know more than ever that I won’t be happy without a big bouquet in my hand. Flowers have surfaced emotions that I didn’t even know existed. And when I got these pictures back from the workshop, I cried. Ridiculous, right? Who cries over seeing their work on film? Apparently, I do.

So here’s just a glimpse of the magic that took place down in North Carolina this spring. There’s lots more loveliness coming and I’m sure this won’t be the last time you hear me reference my ‘new flower friends’ or the charming Kelly Perry.

Oh my stars have I had some excitement happening over here! The last couple months have simply been amazing — from attending flower workshops to making flowers for Bloom the Workshop — I’m living on a beautiful high! Plus wedding season officially starts for The Day’s Design TOMORROW!!

As an added bonus (as if I needed something else to be excited about!), I met Lauren from Once Wed at Kelly Perry’s workshop and this sweet girl invited me to become part of the Once Wed preferred vendor guide. Eek.. how exciting is that!? So now it’s official and you can see my listing on their beautiful blog.

Blackbirds

When I was younger my favorite bird was the starling, or more commonly known as the blackbird. I just loved their dark color and the almost iridescent appearance their feathers took on at the tips of their wings. To me, this was shiny and sparkly and well, who wouldn’t love a sparkly bird!?

It was then pointed out to me that these birds were a nuisance, not pretty show birds and that I shouldn’t like them. So I set my sights on the bold cardinal in his brilliant red and the sweet, but rarely seen bluebird. I appreciated the speckled coat of the woodpecker and the playful yellow of the finch. But secretly, I still always liked it when Mr. Blackbird landed in my yard.

How often do we do this? How often do we stop liking something simply because someone tells us that it isn’t “cool”? Guilty – right here, point the finger at me!

One of the interesting things about working from home is the way you form ideas and opinions. There’s no one here to tell me my idea blows or that I shouldn’t consider something. There’s no one here at all. So when I come across something I love, I’m free to love it without any judgment passed. Working in my own personal space allows me to be me. Then I step outside of my little bubble and am sometimes hit with the harsh reality that my idea is a little crazy. But I’ve psyched myself up all day about it. So I either re-evaluate and either drop it or stick with my gut. Ultimately though, it is my decision.

I’m probably not going to take up bird watching anytime soon, and I’ve definitely started loving lots of other birds and their “not shiny” feathers. Even as I was looking for a picture to go with this post (because sadly I didn’t have anything in my portfolio with blackbirds, ha!), the words “pest” and “how to get rid of blackbirds” were displayed first and foremost across Google’s results. But sometimes you can find beauty in even the peskiest things. So I think we should always remember to keep ourselves happy and don’t be afraid of standing up for what we like, there’s beauty in that too.

A Blank Canvas

We just sold our huge dining room set. It was a solid maple Ethan Allen table which easily expanded to seat 10 people, along with a huge matching hutch. It was pretty – but it wasn’t right for me. It was so nice that I was scared to touch it and would panic every time guests came to dinner. Considering Hubby is a chef and we love to host dinner parties, this is pretty ridiculous, right?

It’s funny how having an empty dining room is a huge weight off my shoulders. It seems so airy and bright, open to new possibilities and full of freshness.

So what’s next? Well that’s the thing, I don’t have to have it all figured out just yet. Possibly a new office space which could then easily be turned dining room when the occasional presents itself? Or maybe a better place to craft, put together awesome event details and florals? I don’t know.

My previous visions of a new creative space for me aren’t falling into place exactly as planned. There are some hiccups in the scheming of the basement remodel. As a planner, this is sometimes hard to swallow. Sometimes it’s hard to admit that I don’t have a plan or my plans changed. But here’s what I’ve come to realize – first off, it’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind. And secondly, I plan ALL THE TIME, it’s just what I do. I don’t think there’s ever a moment in time where some sort of creative vision isn’t floating through my head. But I don’t bring them all to life. That doesn’t make me a failure and I’m still awesome with my craft. It just makes me human.

I was reminded of this last Friday as I sat in a room with about 35 other woman who are just trying to figure out their craft, hone their visions and find the right fit and purpose for them. They don’t have it all figured out yet, some are searching for website and social media answers while some are still trying to figure out what they were put on this earth to accomplish. Just because they haven’t figured it out yet doesn’t mean that I don’t respect them or think of them as less of a person or business woman. It just reminded me that this is a constant journey for everyone and I don’t have to feel 100% on top of my game every single moment in time. I should probably cut myself some slack.

For the moment I have a big blank canvas in front of me. And I love it.

Oh Dad..

What would the world be like without Dads? I cannot even begin to fathom where I might be without mine. This amazing man helps feed my crazy… with his own crazy!! And while I know he doesn’t have Facebook, has probably never been on my blog and has no idea what Instagram is… he still needs this recognition. My dad has told me “No,” countless times, only to come back an hour later with blueprints in hand on how to make my “crazy” happen. And then he steps it up a notch, inspiring me to be even better.

So anytime I have an idea or inspiration or need to talk a business idea through, I go straight to Dad. Or if my project requires power tools that seem a bit too powerful to me (I have this totally irrational fear of losing my fingers!), to Dad I go and he makes it happen for me. Thanks for all your support, for showing me all the things that girls need to know and for making sure I always owned more tools than my boyfriends!
