What’s in a Name

Back when I was in high school, I had this girlfriend who knew exactly what she was going to name her children.  She had great taste and the names she picked out were adorable.  But I couldn’t help but wonder about her determination to use these names.  What if her future husband didn’t like these names?  How could she be sure they’d stand the test of time and she’d still like them in 10 years?  I suppose I just didn’t have her same confidence.

This friend doesn’t currently have children, although I’m sure they’re in her future, I will be curious to see if she’s waivered on her naming decisions throughout the years.

The idea of naming something has been on my mind a lot lately.  As a mother of two children, I can attest to what a challenge it is picking the right name.  You worry about the uniqueness, the life consequences of your choice, if others will like it,  the way it sounds, the ease of pronunciation, the spelling, the meaning and significance and making sure that your cousin hasn’t chosen the same name – after all her baby will be born a month before yours.  As difficult as it is to name a child, it’s just as crazy difficult to name a business.  Sometimes even more so, because you’re trying to brand yourself and get a certain message across.

I have a couple people in my life lately who have been bouncing naming ideas off of me.  And it’s made me reflect back to when I was naming my own business and how I finally settled on The Day’s Design.

Truth be told, it was a decision I didn’t make with much confidence.  I certainly wasn’t full of resolve like my high school friend.  I was thinking a lot about weddings and I wasn’t really sure where this little entrepreneurial adventure was taking me yet.  I actually am a licensed cosmetologist, and much of my early wedding industry experience was doing hair on site for bridal party members.  I had an interest in wedding planning and a degree in hospitality.  I also had an interest in flowers.  Suddenly there was an opportunity knocking at my door for paid floral services and assistance with an event.  It was an awesome prospect that could potentially launch me into my future.  So I realized I needed business cards and my business needed a name on said card.

Regardless of what direction my business ultimate landed in, it was going to revolve around the wedding day.  This is the day that little girls dream of their entire life.  So The Day’s Design was born.  I had a couple other ideas picked out, and honestly I can’t even remember what they were now.  It was kind of like throwing darts in the dark, and that’s where my name landed.  But it seemed good, not too fluffy but wedding-ish.  And the best part was I could keep the name whether I decided to pursue hair or wedding planning.  I had a logo and business cards made and I was in business (kind of) as The Day’s Design :: Event Styling.

It was another year before I became officially official – quit your day job and register a DBA official – but this year will mark 5 years of official The Day’s Design business.  It’s come a long long ways since those early days of really girly designs and my burlap and lace website.

It was around year 3 that I really began to define myself and understand my own aesthetic and what I wanted to create.  Really, I’m still honing in on that, constantly evolving to be the best version of myself and my brand.  But around that time I wondered if I should change my name.  I knew at that point that I definitely wasn’t pursuing the cosmetology aspect and my name just seemed like 3 boring words thrown together.

I did a lot of thinking and soul searching during this time.  Again, I think branding is something that will constantly and forever be evolving throughout the course of one’s business.  I realized I could be dissatisfied in a couple more years with whatever new name I decided to choose.  However, I still wasn’t convinced.  Then one day as all these thoughts were swimming around in my head, there was another thought that joined.  I was reminded of a song I used to sing as a child, “This is the day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.”

This is the day. Suddenly my business name had dual meaning and it felt right.  God creates every day, the good ones and the bad ones.  He has made every single day in our lives, including your wedding day.  And we rejoice and celebrate on that day.  My business is filled with a heart of celebration and I was at peace in my naming struggle.

I’m going to hold out until fall before I ring the bells of 5 years celebrating.  There’s more brand evolution and a new website coming soon.  But for the moment I seeking contentment and celebration in each and every day that passes.

I have goals, both in business and in life.  I’m not very vocal about these goals even though I’ve heard from numerous sources that voicing them will help you to achieve them.  I’m the exception to this rule.  I’m the girl who just feels even more miserable about herself when I fail and feels like a fool for having to publically broadcast my failure, which makes me never want to set another goal again.  Period.

But one of the silent goals that I have for my little business is being achieved today.  It has been a long time coming with lots of hard work and tears and a constant strife to be better and challenge myself more, which I feel is helpful not only to oneself but also to my clients.  So here I am – The Day’s Design – published on the front page of Style Me Pretty.

Bloom the Workshop :: Recap

0 · Jul 14, 2014 ·

I used to think that learning should take place in school.  I thought that to get a good education, you needed to attend a good school or college.  At least that’s what was always preached to me, so why shouldn’t I believe it?  I was taught that in order to succeed in life, you needed a bachelor’s degree and possibly more.  And if you didn’t invest in your education, you were destine for failure.

My thinking has shifted away from what my 18 year old self once thought.  I definitely had those “why do I need to know this?” moments in school, but for the most part just sucked it up and went to class every day believing that this is what would help me achieve my goals and get a good job.   In fact, the thought never occurred to me that perhaps I could teach myself a thing or two, or I could learn from other business people or attend small workshops.

I now think that it’s determination more than anything that will help you succeed in life.  I learned language skills, basic business principles and various other things in college which I’m sure impact me more than I realize.  I believe that college teaches you how to interact in the “real world”.  However pushing yourself and being open to new ideas and learning from one another is HUGE.  Surround yourself with like-minded individuals and people who inspire you – you will absorb so much.

About a month ago I was able to play a small role in bringing Bloom the Workshop to West Michigan.  I supplied some super pretty blooms and did a little behind the scenes work for Ashley and Michaela and helped bring their creative vision to life.  They are the type of people I like to surround myself with.  And the best part is, they want to inspire, they want to teach and they want to see you succeed.  I was able to watch them teach 30 ladies about business, blogging, social media, styling, design, photography and life.  And I left inspired.  I wasn’t even an attendee!

So while I want to share with you some of the pretty that took place that day, I also want you to consider investing in yourself, your creative side and your business.  There’s always something more to learn.

One of my favorite parts of the workshop was how interactive it was.  Ashley and Michaela didn’t give give the attendees a bunch a information and send them on their merry ways, but they also planned a time to put that information and new skills to the test.  The afternoon consisted of a styled shoot portion, which believe it or not, is a great way showcase work in many industries, not just the wedding inspiration shoots we’re so accustom to seeing.  From styling papers to models to flowers and beyond, participants photographed and played with different designs, poses, locations and lighting.

Overcoming your Three Greatest Challenges in the New Year

0 · Jan 3, 2014 ·

Well friends, 2014 is officially here.  And after traveling to Lake Leelanau, Detroit and East Lansing and hosting 2 dinner parties all in the past 2 weeks, I’m ready for life to start getting back to a normal pace.  I am also ready for focus on things ahead.

I have never been one for New Year’s resolutions though.  I suppose it’s really more of a fear of failing at them, which most people do.  So rather than concurring my fears, I tend to just avoid them.  Which right now, I fully intend to continue doing.  You see, a couple months ago I thought that if I blogged about my goals for the month, it would help me stay accountable.  That didn’t work either.  I was purposely vague about them (rather than making them specific and attainable as I have been taught in all my business classes) and I just disappointed myself, in the end feeling more like a failure.

So on that note, I’ve been trying to figure out how to approach 2014, both personally and professionally.  I still haven’t figured it out.  However, on Sunday we had a guest speaker at our church and I think he had some great insights on the New Year.  Here’s what he had to say:

Overcoming your Three Greatest Challenges in the New Year

1.  There will be storms to survive.

The New Year will provide new challenges.  Some of those might be left over from last year and some may be completely out of the blue and brand spanking new.  But either way, God is with you.  With Him, you can weather the storm.  The key is to keep your eye on the provider, the one who can calm the wind and the waves, rather than focusing on the problem, or the storm itself.

2.  There will be mountains to climb.

Instantly when he said this the first thought that came to mind was “no hill for a stepper” – which is a ridiculous saying that I have heard come out of my mother’s mouth time and time again.  But there’s some truth there.  Take one step at a time making your way to the top.  It might be a slow journey, but you can make it.  God is for you!  When God looks at you, he can see your full potential.  Have faith that through Him you can do all things.

3.  There will be battles to fight.

God is fighting for you.

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all the generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21.

Our minds are so little and cannot even comprehend all the God is able to do.  Do you ever wonder if God finds our simple requests silly and is up there having a good chuckle?  Nevertheless, He will fight for you.  The outcome might not be exactly what you had planned, but that’s okay.  I think He has His eye on a bigger picture.

I know there will be surprises along the way and challenges on the road ahead.  However, I’m having faith that there is a greater plan and better things yet to come in 2014.

Happy New Year!
