Using Local vs. Seasonal Flowers :: Part 1

0 · Apr 4, 2017 ·

Flowers are shipped to us from around the world.  We’re often educated by wedding blogs and others in the industry about cutting costs by using local flowers and making sure we’re choosing flowers that are in season.  But because we’re able to source flowers from so many different places, the idea of what’s “in season” becomes a little clouded.  If we solely relied 100% on local flowers, I think that could result in a really stressful time for brides, everyone wants some idea of what they’re getting and often Mother Nature has ideas of her own.  Any flowers we purchase are “in season” somewhere, but the question is where?  While I’m certain that it’s not the intent of any one writer to misinform their audience when it comes to floral knowledge, we must realize that every area and growing season is different but there are a few misconceptions that I’d really like to clear up.

Local versus Seasonal

Right now, there is a large variety of flowers available on the wholesale market.  The Japanese ranunculus and sweet peas are stealing the show and poppies are making me weak in the knees.  I would say these are all “seasonal” products.  However, they’re certainly not local.

In January, I saw the return of lilacs to my supplier’s list.  They’re Dutch lilacs and they’re very nice.  Within the last week, I saw California lilacs added which are a far superior product in my opinion.  The bunches are larger which makes them more than worth the price.  I still have another month and a half to wait for Michigan lilacs, which for obvious reasons are my very favorite, but by then, my wholesalers are going to tell me that lilac season is over even though I’m cutting them locally.

Living in Michigan means that our growing season is shorter and behind the schedule of much of the country’s.  Often I mix both local and wholesaler flowers because it’s less risky.  If I’m relying solely on local peonies and we have a late spring, they might not bloom in time.  Or if it rains really hard the week before your wedding, the petals may all fall off.  For small quantities and accent flowers, I use local whenever possible but I have to have a backup plan in place.

Seasonal Products aren’t Always Cheaper

We’ve been told time and time again that if we use flowers that are in season, they’ll be cheaper and we can save our floral budgets.  But this isn’t necessarily true.  For example, this time of year, Japanese and Dutch products reign high, as do their price tags. These flowers are being shipped from continents away, to wholesalers in New York, California and then there’s a very limited amount that makes its way to my local, Michigan wholesalers.  I am often able to source these products and love doing so, but I have to accommodate for all those extra traveling adventures those flowers are on.  So unfortunately, just because these blooms are in season, there’s not a cheap price tag attached to this very premium product.

On the adverse side of that, last month I paid $6 a stem for peonies.  That was wholesale price, which I then had to mark up to turn a profit and well, you can quickly see why peonies bouquets are often so expensive.  However, last June I was driving along and saw a roadside stand selling the same flower in bunches of 8 for $5.  Local was cheaper by a long shot.  So in this case, local and seasonal peonies were the best option.

The second part of this post is going to focus more on local flowers and my love/hate relationship with them.  Alright, there’s really a lot of love just some challenges that get presented to sourcing them.  If you have more questions regarding choosing the right flowers, local, seasonal or otherwise I’d love to hear them and hopefully provide some answers.  Maybe we could even turn this into a 3 part series. Stay tuned!

Just Create

0 · Feb 12, 2015 ·

Yesterday one of my favorite bouquets I’ve ever created was featured on Style Me Pretty, along with a whole other slew of talented ladies who love to create beautiful blooms, with beautiful hearts.  It was a reminder of spring, of the vibrancy, the color and the much needed refresh we all need in our life after a long, cold winter.

Team Flower Workshop | The Day's Design | Heather Payne Photography

Flowers have intrigued me for as long as I can remember, although it wasn’t with the passion for education and growth that they do now.  When I was a little girl, I remember planting wildflower seeds around the perimeter of our above ground pool and waiting for them to bloom.  The poppies always stand out in my memory the most.  While it takes a while for those sprouts to grown, if you never plant the seeds, you will never see the fruits of your labor.

Kelly Perry, the creator of the Team Flower workshop, also shared our flowers on the Team Flower blog.  It’s funny how two blogs can share the same content but connect with the subjects in a whole different way.  To one, they’re just a bunch of beautifully captured images which audiences love to see.  To another, they’re a story, a conquest and a beginning.

I was thinking about this beginning, the way we start our creations.  Sometimes it can be paralyzing to start.  We always want to put our best foot forward and aim for perfection, but like Kelly mentioned, it’s risky.  It’s comforting to know that someone else also just starts arranging, not really knowing where the results will lead.  And we can’t please everyone.

When I stepped off the plane to attend this workshop, I didn’t know where I was headed.  I didn’t know who I would meet.  I didn’t even know the girl I had agreed to spend the next 2 hours of my life carpooling with (she was awesome, by the way).  And beyond this, I didn’t know where this workshop would lead me and the ways it would unleash a passion that was bottled up within, held hostage by fear.

Then I started to create this bouquet.  Rows and rows of beautiful blooms were placed in front of me and I was told to go, create.  It’s hard to know where to begin, I didn’t have a vision in mind.  I didn’t have any limits or parameters.  All I knew is that I wanted to make something gorgeous.

I remember seeing that big, beautiful fuchsia peony and I held it in my hand as it spoke to me.  It was a starting point.  I found some quirky little kumquats and a softer pink tree peony, which also called to me.  This was the base, the inspiration.  I continued to build upon this, grabbing ingredients that I liked and some that just felt like they belonged – they connected the colors, the story.

Every time I gather flowers for an event I seek to recreate this feeling that I had in that moment.  I squeal with excitement when flower orders arrive at my doorstep.  And I want to tell your tale while creating your bridal bouquet.  It might sound a little deep but I can’t just cluster flowers together and call it a day.  I’ve remade bouquets 4 and 5 times, until they’re accurately depicting the account of your celebration and worthy of being held in your hands.  And sometimes that’s scary, sometimes I wonder where I’ll find the time or how I’ll ever conquer perfection but I know I have to start somewhere and my amazing clients are trusting me to take that first step.

So when I feel that pressure start to build up and that fear starts to creep in, I have to remind myself to take a step back, let the flowers do the talking and just create.

The Rose

0 · Feb 5, 2015 ·

We’ve downplayed the romance of roses.  I had yet another bride tell me that she isn’t a fan of roses.  While it’s not uncommon for me to hear, it is somewhat disheartening.  I can’t use ANY roses in your arrangements?  I think we’re sick of seeing tightly wound bunches sadly wrapped in cellophane, thrown together with a couple sprigs of baby’s breath and being advertised as something we should love.  However, when I think of all the beautiful blooms that you’re excluding, it’s somewhat heartbreaking.   There are so many great varieties beyond the typical South American blooms we associate with the word “rose” leaving so many flowers behind that we’re simply not appreciating.

I love creating with roses.  I love pulling the center petals from the little spray roses to reveal the cute little stamens hiding inside.   The way a garden rose can transform from a tight, round bud to a glorious bloom layered with ruffles and frills is really exciting.  And I want to share this with you.

Yellow Garden Roses | The Day's Design | Heather Cisler Photography

Picture: Heather Cisler Photography

The yellow rose – a symbol of friendship.  I could stay friends with these lovelies all day long.  What you see here is an American grown, buttery yellow California bloom paired with a yellow Finesse rose – which is a standard variety but they have a softer, almost ruffly texture on their outer edges making just a touch more fancy.  The butter tones accentuate those found in the ivory spray roses on the left and who can resist adding a couple of tulips and ranunculus to the mix!?

Ivory and Pink Garden Roses | The Day's Design | Kelly Sweet Photography

Picture: Kelly Sweet Photography

I created this bouquet for a bride who had her heart set on peonies.  There’s no doubt that peonies are one of my all time favorites and I’m hopeful for the day that they’re available year around… or maybe it’s the fact that they’re not that makes them so special.  Either way, I wasn’t able to accommodate my October bride’s wishes.  However, I don’t think either of us were too disappointed by the results.

I had the roses shipped in from Oregon, which made them extra special. The large ivory ones (Helga Paiget) were especially my favorites as some blooms had just a touch of pink accenting their outer petals.  And when they opened it was pure magic.  Layer upon layer of delicate petals were revealed.  They were placed next to the Romantic Antike roses (the coral-y pink ones).  Those too are extraordinary in their own way.  While closed, they are a beautifully round bud and opened, they flatten out with a swirling petal arrangement that leads to a golden center.  Also shown are a few delicately sweet Champagne roses in blush tones and some PeeGee hydrangeas with peach stock.

Carmel Antike and Red Rose | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater Photography

Picture: Ashley Slater Photography

I’m not sure what what exactly inspired this combination of roses.  The Caramel Antikes and the red garden roses (which the grower considered brown) were shipped to me from California (on a side note… I would love to source more roses from Michigan, anyone want to recommend a grower to me?) and the pale blush/beige one of the left in fact is a South American Quicksand rose.  I just threw these in a vase together with some chocolate cosmos and grabbed a couple leaves off a bush in my backyard but I loved the results!

Still think roses are boring?  If you still don’t like roses, I understand and will not force my preference upon you.  But with so many varieties, colors, sizes and design options I really think we should reconsider.

Another Year Older

Yesterday was my birthday.  It wasn’t an exciting day, no one sang to me or gave me cake.  It was simply just another day reminding us that life moves forward whether we embrace it or not and no one can escape the aging process.

Last month I was sitting with a couple of wedding friends enjoying light-hearted conversation.  The topic of pregnancy arose and I made an off-handed comment about that being an issue in the industry, since so many of us are so young.  It was at this point that I was very bluntly (but lovingly) put in my place – I’m not that young.

Since it’s been brought to my attention, I’ve realizing the level of truth in this statement. I’m getting old, which I’m sure is a point that would be disputed by those 20+ years my senior.  But I’ve been asked before if I’ll “outgrow” my job.  I think about long-term business and personal goals and wonder where I really should be at this time in my life.  I’m not the 21 year old that just graduated collage and started a business – although truth be told,  I don’t think I would have had the guts to take that leap then.  I’ve established a level of maturity, and while my business and brand and even life (for that manor) might evolve I don’t foresee it going anywhere.  I’m right where I want to be.

So these two inspirational quotes are going to stand by me today.

“Don’t compare your beginnings to someone else’s middle.”  And while I feel like I’m finally traveling into the “middle” section of my journey, I still need to be careful not to compare, which leads me to my next point:

“Comparison is the theft of all joy.”  Just do your thing.  Worry about your life and forget about “the industry” which you’re in.  Forget about your friend’s fancy new house or promotion.  Just keep pushing on and doing what makes you happy.

Farewell 2014

0 · Dec 31, 2014 ·

I was not going to do a year end post, I mean, do people even read these?  I don’t think it’s an original idea and I’m not sure that there’s a single person out there that truly cares what my year looked like.  But earlier this week I was going through some goals, figuring out how to get where I want to be in 2015 and it really did inspire me to think about where I started in January of 2014 and how my business has evolved over the course of a very short year.

Even though 2014 was The Day’s Design’s second official full wedding season, I was still a little unsure of myself and did not have high expectations.  But the thing about having low expectations is, it’s not hard to exceed them — which I did, 10x over.  I gave myself a boost of confidence this past year and know that I am worthy of an amazing 2015, which is looking really busy and cannot wait to celebrate with the sweet couples I have booked this year and the ones I am yet to meet.

I hope my journey inspires someone out there to keep moving forward and following their dreams, it’s not easy but if you’re passionate about doing what you love, then it’s so worth it.  Without further ado, I’ll take you on a walk through my year.

January

I got the brilliant idea to put together a Valentine’s bouquet and model it myself… in the middle of a blizzard.  Thanks Heather for freezing along with me!Valentine's Bouquet | Winter Wedding Flowers | The Day's Design | Heather Cisler Photography

Later that month my Valentine’s bouquet was featured on on Burnett’s Boards.  You can see the feature here.

March

Cabin fever officially set in and I found myself getting antsy and itching to use a little creative energy.  In remedy, Ashley Slater Photography and I teamed up to put together a little tutorial on how you can make your very own gilded floral crown.

April

This month was special for two reasons.  First off, Heather Cisler and I teamed up once again to put together a fabulous fairytale inspired photo shoot.

Yellow Boutonniere | The Day's Design | Heather Cisler Photography

And secondly I made a HUGE business changing decision and took a leap into adding floral services alongside planning and coordination.  All I can say is, what took me so long!?  This passion was hidden deep within me and a creative freedom has been unleashed and I will never look back.  Bring on the blooms!

May

I stepped away from weddings and floral work for a moment to be a part of something a little different, but equally amazing.  Kellie Hetler has a heart for service and put together the More Than a Face campaign, which is designed to help high schools girls to find their inner worth and realize what a difference they can make.  Each one of these women was so beautiful and unique – I’m so glad I had the opportunity to be a part and bring a little extra style to this shoot.

Shortly thereafter I packed my bags and headed for the mountains of North Carolina.  I wasn’t prepared for how this experience would change my life.  I realized how to create, how to better see things and found a deep appreciation for my surroundings and finding beauty in the everyday.  I climbed mountains both literally and figuratively and walked away with friendships I will cherish forever.  Kelly Perry of Philosophy Flowers is an absolute delight and the true definition of a floral artist.  The rest of the Team Flower ladies are an equal treasure.  If only we could travel back in time, I would relive those moments of and over again, sure to find something fresh and new every time.  Photography: Heather Payne Photography.

I rushed home from my workshop to share my experience with those I cherish most, my family.  I picked a few foraged blooms and we ventured out to the apple orchard to have our family photos taken with Kellie Hetler.  I love these sweet moments.

June

June started out on a rather cold note.  I was part of Bloom the Workshop, hosted by Ashley Slater Photography and Michaela Noelle Designs.  While I remember how great is was providing beautiful blooms to such an inspiring group of women, I also remember how cold it was that day.

And then came the first wedding of the 2014 season… an intimate ceremony in the woods with an ode to Alice in Wonderland.  This was a fabulous way to kick off the wedding season and was featured on Style Me Pretty last month.  Photography: Kelly Sweet Photography.

July

July was a month of rest.  I had a busy August ahead and took the first part of the month for a little relaxation and the second half and full on wedding prep — but there’s never any pretty pictures to share from that!

August

This was my busy month, but it’s definitely worth my couple moments of being frazzled to see the smiling faces at the end of a wedding nice – so happy, so in love.

First up, a day-of coordination with the ceremony at the blue bridge in downtown Grand Rapids and a beautiful blush and grey reception to follow at the Downtown Market.  I haven’t tracked down any pictures yet but think modern, airy space, soft grey silky linens and soft blush blooms.

Next came floral design for a couple who said “I do” at the Bissell Tree House.  And in case you’re wondering, Thursday weddings are totally fun!  Photography: Joe Matthews.

Grand Rapids Wedding | The Day's Design | Grand Rapids florist

And then it was off to Northern Michigan for a festive and fun celebration at a llama farm… because who wouldn’t want to get married at a llama farm?!  Again, I don’t have pictures to share yet but if you’re looking for a fun celebration – why not get married on a hilltop overlooking Lake Michigan with llamas in the background.  Think local wildflowers, a live jazz band and fun dinosaur escort cards.

Then we celebrated one more set of nuptials this month.  I feel honored to be a part of any wedding day – it’s a big deal, and these memories are extremely important, but when the bride and groom happen to be a couple of your closest friends, that just adds a whole new level of special to the day.  I was lucky enough to provide floral services, and then helped the couple celebrate into the night.   Dahlias, dahlias and more dahlias surrounded this love filled day.  Photography: Chelsea Seekell Photography.

September

The months of August and September seem to be increasingly popular times to get married.  I did a little freelance floral work for not one, but 2 weddings in Northern Michigan with Sincerely, Ginger Weddings.  It’s always super fun to collaborate with like-minded, creative individuals.

And let’s not forget Amy & Emyr’s picture perfect day at the Gull Lake Country Club.

September also hosted one of my favorite styled shoots ever.  I actually hesitate to call it a styled shoot because in reality we invited guests, guests who needed a little extra love and a night to remember just how special they really all.  This was the dinner parties of all dinner parties and I’m so thankful for all the vendors who volunteered to be a part.  Photography: Ashley Slater Photography.

October

This past summer I received a phone call from the sweetest bride you have ever met telling me how she didn’t have a florist yet for her October wedding.  After hearing all the details she had in place for her Northport wedding, I knew I had to be a part.  The Willowbrook Mill has been so high on my list “must work” wedding locations that I just about fell out of my chair when she said that was her venue.  It was a match made in heaven as I created florals, helped design and coordinated all the details of Christina and Tim’s day.

November

In the name of furthering education, Kaci Muller (of Just Delightful Events) and I got together for a morning of flower talk and coffee and compared notes on how we typically create our beautiful wedding bouquets and Kellie Hetler joined in the fun so we’d have a few pictures to share with you.

And then to cap off the year, Katie Grace Photography and I just had to go play with a few of my leftover blooms.  I’m going to start making bouquet and floral recipes a more common feature on my blog, I can’t wait!

You Bring Our Hearts to Life

0 · Dec 23, 2014 ·

Burgundy Bridal Bouquet | The Day's Design | Hetler Photography

“We believe in the kingdom come,

We believe in the risen Son,

You bring our hearts to life.”

This is the anthem that’s been ringing through my head this week.  And while this isn’t exactly a Christmas song, is it connected to the holiday theme.  It’s because of Christmas that we can sing this at all. (You can hear the whole song here.)

Just think, if Jesus hadn’t been born in the manger, there would be no risen Son.  There would be no hope, no joy, no peace.  Our hearts wouldn’t have life.

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the presents and hot cocoa or even write blog posts about how much we miss our Christmas trees (I caved and put one up over the weekend, by the way) – but to me this season is really based on hope.  I simply cannot comprehend what it would be life to live in this world without the knowledge that someday I’m leaving and headed to my eternal home.  This isn’t forever and the best truly is yet to come.

May you be surrounded with this comfort and joy as you celebrate this Christmas.

Original Recipe :: Peonies & Pinecones

0 · Dec 15, 2014 ·

Winter Floral Arrangement | The Day's Design | Katie Grace Photography

People tell me all the time how limited they feel when it comes to winter flowers.  It’s as if their imaginations just can’t see what’s not in bloom staring at them right in their face, or in their backyards.  Perhaps this attributes to the low number of winter weddings, sometimes you just have a hard time finding beauty in all the grey and the muck.

I think peonies are one of these forgotten winter flowers.  It’s often assumed that they’re a springtime bloom, so only available during that time. While this is true in Michigan, it is springtime in other parts of the world and today it’s possible to have flowers shipped all around the globe while still keeping the costs low.  So let’s beat the winter blues and remember that we can create beauty all around us, we might just have to search a little beyond our own gardens.

Winter Flower Recipe | The Day's Design | Katie Grace Photography

Today’s recipe includes a couple springtime favorites (peonies and ranunculus), combined with some winter greens (magnolia leaves, seeded eucalyptus, and foraged cedar greens), a variety of roses which are available for most part all year (amnesia roses, lavender and white spray roses) and then head on out to your back yard for a couple of pine cones – which I think are extra lovely when gilded gold (a little dusting of spray paint should do the trick).

Saying “Pish Posh”

0 · Sep 25, 2014 ·

Foraged Bouquet | The Day's Design | Hetler Photography

It was around this time back in 2011 that I had my first paid floral order.  It was a small order, 3 arrangements for a casual, catered dinner party.  Needless to say, I was excited.

I researched and schemed.  I gathered information and I was going to make these arrangements be the most beautiful flowers anyone had ever seen.  Being as it was September, I choose to add some autumn hints, with browns and burgundy, a few sunflowers and some seeded eucalyptus.  One large mantel display and two centerpieces later, I was almost pleased with myself.  It was missing something…

So off I went for a walk.  The perfect mix of green and yellow is what I sought and I found it easily within my reach, right in the comfort of my own yard.  Now they were perfect.  The foraged greens added the perfect amount of extra texture and completed my color palette.

Upon arrival with my arrangements, the secretary in charge of the dinner did not share my enthusiasm for the foraged greenery I was so proud of.  In fact, other than some pleasantries about how nice it was to meet me, the only comment I heard about my flowers was “these greens, they look like they’re dead”.

I was mortified.  I thought I had found a way for me to create; I thought I was stepping outside of the comforts and confines of a traditional floral shop and perhaps even finding my niche.  I had always picked roadside blooms and other treasures for my garden, I didn’t see why I couldn’t do it even if I were selling the arrangements.   And so I let one negative comment stop my vision of becoming a floral designer.  Fear and judgment took over.

A year passed before I played with more flowers.  And even then it was mostly for my own viewing pleasure.  Her voice was always there, in the back of my head questioning my every move, every flower I choose and leaf I picked.

Today I would like to say “Pish Posh” to her.  Her who had the audacity to question my art and pass criticism my way.  Today I understand that negative criticism will always be lurking around the corner but I will press forward, maybe learning from my mistakes and maybe just taking it with a grain of salt.

“The voice you believe will determine the future you experience.” — I saw this quote last night and thought it was so fitting.

The above bouquet  was 100% foraged from my garden and might include a couple of “weeds” from my yard, but I think it’s kind of lovely in its own spunky way.  The picture was captured by Hetler Photography.

That’s a Wrap… almost

0 · Sep 24, 2014 ·

I have had a delightfully busy wedding season and have just one more gorgeous fête on the 2014 calendar.  Each celebration was so special and unique and I am so honored that so many brides have entrusted me to be a part of their special day.  However, I did something during this wedding season which I said I would never do, and I paid the price.

August was a grand slam of a month.  When I started my business I promised myself I would limit the number of weddings I took on in any particular month or I might lose my mind.  I did not heed my own warning and in the middle of my busiest month – where I not only booked too many brides but also booked two weddings in one week – my grandpa passed away.  In an 8 day stretch I had 3 weddings a funeral, 2 trips to Traverse City and I was an emotional wreck.

Moving forward I realized I will endure and how much I can endure, even though I’m still catching my breath.   I thought being too busy with weddings was a reality I wouldn’t have face for years to come.  It really is an answer to prayer, even if in the craziness of the moment I began questioning every career decision I’ve ever made!  So if you’re wondering what I’ve been up to I really can’t wait to share.  Unfortunately I’ll have to keep you on the edge of your seats a bit longer as I wait for more photos to arrive. However, I will get back to blogging because there are a lot of ideas in this head of mine I just haven’t been able to write about just yet.

And obviously I have to reveal at least a glimpse of one of my happy couples – this bride was too beautiful for words (and carrying a bouquet created by yours truly).

The New Brand Conundrum

I’ve been working with Anchor & Ink on a new logo design for a couple months now.  Chelsi oozes talent – her painting, her lettering, it’s all simply fabulous.

I approached her because I don’t feel my current logo, and complete branding/business for that matter, truly represent me.  Now I know I’ve rambled on before about my style, etc. but it’s hard sometimes to dig deep and recognize who you really are and what you really want.  And on top of that, I think who you are evolves over time – a time that might be shorter than you think.

I have never been a fan of pink.  I mean it’s cute, fun and at times romantic but it’s never really been my cup of tea.  But for some reason a couple years ago I was crushing on it, hard.  So I have pink business cards and doses of it scattered throughout my website.  Did I deviate from who I am or was there a time where I actually was that person?  I think my old self is starting to creep back and suddenly the only place I want to see pink is in flowers and on my baby girl.  But I’m still very open to working and creating with the color as it seems to keep sneaking into my events.  Blush and gold seems to be every bride’s fantasy and I’m perfectly alright with that.

So where does that leave me?  Well that’s a question I’ve been asking for a while now.  Designing a logo is hard.  I’m a difficult client.  Hmph.

This is my current branding, which I am reevaluating after much much much soul searching.  I’m digging deep to figure out who I am and who I want this business of mine to represent.  But in the end here’s what I’ve discovered when it comes to marketing —  I’d rather go play with flowers!

Soon, very soon, I’ll show you what’s in the final works.  I just put my big girls pants on and made a couple of decisions — because it’s the middle of wedding season, what else do I have going on right now???

Wild & Free

0 · Jun 23, 2014 ·

Over the weekend I read the quote “All good things are wild and free” – Henry David Thoreau.

I can’t get it out of my head.

I don’t know the original context or what point he was trying to make when he said those words, but I do have this feeling of home when I read it.  I feel like it’s somehow belongs with me and holds a liberating truth.

When I think about how I want my life to be, the words contained, ordinary and tame do not come to mind.  Not in the least bit.  But rather I have this imagery of myself running barefoot through an open field of wild flowers a warm breeze running through my hair.  Wild and free.

I think of the majestic lioness on the prowl through the safari of African, graceful and strong.  She’s stalking her prey, caring for her young and soaking up the hot summer sun. Wild and free.

I think of a lush, hand picked bouquet.  Each flower allowed to shine with it’s own grace, evoking a feeling reminiscent of the garden where it once belonged.  Draping greenery, curled stems and delicate petals all speak with their own voice bringing the bouquet to life, not forced to conform into a tight arrangement but able to dance in the fresh air.  Wild and free.

Doesn’t that just seem like the way life should be?

The Best Laid Plans

Pink & Purple Peony Centerpiece

Its peony season here in West Michigan.  It’s also time for me to prepare for my small part in  Bloom the Workshop.  How lucky could I possibly be that fate would bring these two happy occasions together in the same week!?

I have one sad little peony bush in my back yard.  She’s slow to bloom and doesn’t produce many buds.  But each year she comes back and brings me so much joy.  And each year I’m stuck with this dilemma, to pick the flowers and bring them inside to enjoy for a fleeting moment in time or leave them on the bush – where I’ll see them much less but their loveliness will live on a little longer.

This year I decided that they would have a special purpose.  They would be enjoyed by others and I would bring them along with me to Bloom the Workshop.  They would live long after they’re gone in the memories of all my new creative friends.

In addition, I’ve spent my week scouting out the best roadside/garden side/woodland greens and blossoms to add to the ones that will my arriving shortly at my doorstep from my wholesaler.  I never order all of my flowers from a wholesaler – I need to touch, feel and explore to make my creations perfect.  I had a plan, a picking spot and even a travel route all schemed out.

And then came the rain.

My poor little peonies are sadly smushed to the ground.  And while I haven’t exactly explored my other flowers which I was sure to forage – I have a sinking feeling that all their sweet little petals might not be in tack.  What’s a girl to do?

I sadly made my way to the farmer’s market this morning in hopes of finding some fresh cut loveliness like I found the week before, only to find the stalls empty.  So now friends, I have a mission.  And I don’t know yet how this story is going to end or where my travels today might take me.  All I know is that sometimes the best laid plans fail but I will not.  I promised to deliver some gorgeous arrangements to Bloom and I don’t break my promises.

Floral Design 101

1 · May 17, 2014 ·

One of the perks of being married to a GRCC employee is being able to take classes for free.  Did you know that Grand Rapids Community College offers a Floral Design class?  This useful tidbit of information had been passed my way so I thought sure, why not?  What have I got to lose?

3 hours of flowers for 5 days.  That’s all the class entails.  I thought I could be a college student for a measly 5 days.  Oh boy, there are reasons why people wait until after schooling to have kids, who was I kidding?  It wasn’t even a stressful or demanding class but let me say, I am so happy my sister was able to come and spend a few days with me.  What a Godsend!  It was like having a nanny this week. A-MAZ-ING.

So anyway, the downside of the class was that it’s all artificial flowers.  The school just isn’t equipped for fresh – no coolers, sinks or other necessities for fresh.  But design basics are pretty interchangeable so not all was lost.  The curriculum itself is very basic.  I mean, extremely basic.  But I’ve never had any formal training whatsoever, so I actually found it pretty entertaining.  And then there’s the fact that I always look at arrangements and say “Oh, I can do that” but I never actually push myself to do it.  This forced me to take that step and really prove that I can do it.  Some tasked ended up being a touch more difficult than anticipated, I was given rules and couldn’t just grab and create whatever I wanted.  This idea of boundaries threw me for a loop, but I conquered something in myself and it made me very happy.

Traditional Peony Centerpiece | The Day's Design

I’ve never thought of myself as completely traditional. While I like balance, I don’t always like symmetry.  My first task was to create a traditional floral arrangement – rounded, with one central flower and equal flowers all the way around.  I managed to make something lovely.  Mission accomplished.

Next was the contemporary arrangement. Less is more was the motto here.  That’s not always an easy motto for me to live up to.  My instructor said that the contemporary arrangement is usually something that would be described as “interesting” and leave one wondering how they could make that, where as a traditional the reaction would be comments on how pretty it is.  I personally have always thought of contemporary arrangements as slightly on the strange side, extremely clean and angular and definitely not my style.  But I was able to create something that brought my earthy, natural style in and paired it with a more modern shape, placing it in an industrial textured pot.   And yes, I was the student picking up sticks along my walk on the way to class.  Mission #2 accomplished.

Yellow Centerpiece | The Day's Design

Task 3 was architectural.  This was a concept that I was completely unfamiliar with.  Arrangements that fit into this category might include the pyramid, topiaries, pomanders, the “s” shape or horizontal arrangements.  I chose the “s” shape, which seems to be something that I already did, just didn’t realize it.  I always created arrangements in this shape to create balance and movement – I love finding out why things look good to me!

It’s funny the things you learn even in the most basic environments.  I seldom pass up a chance to educate myself, even if I did find myself surrounded by a group of college students using this as an “easy A” to satisfy a necessary elective.  I was able to practice and experiment and it was fun – sometimes you just need to get out of the house to get inspired!

Speaking of getting out of the house – I leave tomorrow for North Carolina!  I cannot wait to meet some new flower friends at Kelly Perry’s workshop.  I need to pack – Team Flower, here I come!!

Flowers are Coming to The Day’s Design!!

0 · Apr 30, 2014 ·

I am so grateful and beyond excited for the opportunity to follow my PASSION for flowers and offer romantic, garden style blooms to my design services.  This May, my travels will take me to North Carolina to attend Philosophy Flowers’s workshop where I hope to hone some of my floral skills.  Flowers make me feel alive and I want to be surrounded by them as often as possible.

Philosophy Flower Workshop

Flowers and design go hand in hand, so this seems like a natural step for me to take.  It’s becoming a rather requested service of me.  And you’ve no doubt seen my floral work throughout my website, in inspirations shoots and even at my own wedding.  In fact, you may have thought this was a service I already offered, which it is, but on a very small scale.  Putting together a few blooms for a birthday party, brunch or simply brighten someone’s day is a little different than creating a design with hundreds of flowers, moving pieces, aisle décor and centerpieces for a wedding.

So when it comes down to it, fear has held me back and I’ve been scared to book a whole wedding’s worth of floral.  There are so many more details to consider than just hand-tying a few blooms together.  And what if I fail?  This is someone’s dream day that I would be crushing!

In light of this, right now my basement is being reworked, plans are being plotted and floral recipes are being created.  If all goes well, full on large scale floral services will be officially be added to The Day’s Designs offerings soon… like really soon, I’m talking to brides about blooms this summer and fall!  Eeekk… I’m so excited to actually be typing those words!

What does it mean for you, my current and future bridal clients?  It means that you will have yet another resource for beautiful blooms.  It means that the person designing and coordinating logistics with also be hands-on with florals and ideas can easily come from one person and one place, without having to communicate your vision over and over again to countless vendors.  It also means one less vendor to worry about on your wedding day.  However, you by no means HAVE to use my floral services.  I know there are so many amazing florists out there, and if one of them strikes your fancy, I highly encourage you to work with them.  No hard feelings, I want your day to represent you and make your vision come to life.  I will also be taking on a limited number of floral only clients, so bring on the flower love!

I can’t wait to share more about my adventures of adding blooms!
