Blush & Blue Winter Tabletop

0 · Jan 27, 2020 ·

January seems like a rather serene month.  There’s lots of white out the window and the colors of Christmas have faded away.  Sometimes I imagine what it would be like to get married right now, or even plan a fabulous dinner party.  Lots of candlelight and coziness seems appropriate yet, but I’m over the glam of the holidays and seek a little more simplicity.

Earlier this month, I shared a few great January flower options.  But I wanted to extend that further, digging into exactly how to use those flowers not only to make a stunning centerpiece or arranmgent, but also a tabletop to go along with it.

I did add a few other flowers, beyond the 5 previously mentioned (in the post here) – white allium, dried bougainvilla, hellebores, kochia and quicksand roses.  I think dried bits and textural pieces are great in any season, but especially right now.  I have a hard time creating a nautral arrangment that doesn’t a least somewhat mimic what’s happening outside.  And outside is very much lacking greenery.

I wanted to pair this combination with blue.  Pink and blue have been a common pairing for awhile now, we saw Panatone choose the two together a couple years back and now blue has once again surfaced as the color of the year – although it’s a much brigher hue this time around.  Perhaps it was the cold weather that has me thinking blue, or just the fact that I love these simple and sleek dinner plates and was determined to find a way to use them.  Either way, I really liked how the white and subtle blushy pink tones of the centerpiece, the deeper blue plates and then adding in some soft blue candles really pulled these entire tabletop together.  The clear glassware and candle holders made me think of ice, another nod the to weather. To top it off, I added in some gold flatware, just dress it up a bit and contrast against the more rustic, whitewash of the wood table.

A couple more thoughts to consider if you’re thinking of recreating this look-

These photos were taken in my studio, which is surrounded by lots of white and natural light.  This could definetely come across a little more moody and beautiful in a darker setting – but I could recommend adding a few more candles.

Navy can photograph lighter – depening upon your photography style.  These plate aren’t a true, deep dark navy blue, but in person read a little more navy than these pictures would have you believe.  The light of the studio reflected off of them for photos and the flowers seem very true to color but not the plates. I’ve used navy ribbon for bouquets in the past and gotten photos back that looked as though bridesmaids were carrying posies wrapped in royal blue.  Just a little note to consider as you’re designing, choosing photographers and pairing colors and settings all together.

“In the cathedral of the woods
where the slanting light shines through
the song of the bird enchants the air
and fills the soul with tranquillity..
Over the open fields the spirit glides on the wing of a bee – – – – or a dragonfly
touching each flower growing there – – – – –
and – – as they day slips into night
finds beauty in a blade of grass . . .
Slowly the great panorama of color changes into purple and greys – – – day is becoming night .
. . . .
Trees stand silhouetted against subdued light – –
– – life of the day is quietly resting as the vigilant life of night is stirring . . . . . .
The evening star glistens beside the pale crest of the new moon which seems to pause a
moment on the horizon – – then slips beyond . . . .
Thousand of fireflies twinkle in the low fields – – – twinkling to their mates – – – – then rise in
ecstasy and mingle with the stars . . . . .
Milliards of stars form a great arc across the heavens and create a luminous light . . There
are summer nights when the stars shoot out of the darkness and almost drop to earth . . . . . .
Even among the steadfast stars
there is change and motion . . . .
There are nights when the northern sky becomes a shimmering curtain with vertical rays of
greens – – – yellows – – and shades of rose – – – moving – – – moving – – – constantly changing
. . . . .
. . . nights of reverence
and tranquil solitude – – – –
time for the imagination to recreate itself . . .”

Remember my Ferngully wedding? That was the opening to her 30+ page wedding style guide she gave me for their fern infused celebration.    And for that reason, and many more, I adored working with Crissie to make her wedding dreams a reality. The remaing pages were filled with poetry,  ferns, art deco details, watercolor touches and shades of glacier grey, lilac, dusk blue and navy peony.  No detail was left untouched.  From her discription of what Northern Michgian means to her with its intricate arms of fern across the forest floor to the selectively chosen gold accents.  She wanted her day to be “an elegant event in a natural setting.  The decor will gracefully elevate the oragnic feel of the surroundings, through a whimsical lens.” I think we accomplished just that.  And today you can see the full feature on Grey Likes Weddings.

Real Weddings :: Mary & Nic’s Foodie Celebration

0 · Oct 5, 2016 ·

Do you remember how hot it was last Labor Day?  I mean, Labor Day 2015 – not this past year.  That’s how far behind I am on blogging gorgeous momeries of days gone by.

Anyway, it was the hottest day I experienced all summer.  I remember so distinctly because I was beyond thankful for the garlands my bride has chosen to line her tables and how she had also shared some concern about having a September wedding and the potential for a good fall chill to join the night air as the sun departed for the day.

This did not happen.  I thought for sure I was going to melt into a puddle and the beautiful dahlias along with me.

The days leading up to Mary and Nic’s celebration were filled with trips to the farmer’s market, foraging excursions and finding the most succulent edible treats to add into their décor.  As I sat down with Mary discussing her wedding florals she gave me only two parameters – they love food, so herbs and other edible delights were welcome (and vary much a MUST) and then she showed me her maid of honor’s dress, which I should use for the color palette inspiration.

So instructions were followed, with artichokes and apples placed into the bouquets.  Bay leaves and olive branches were woven into garlands.  Pomegranates, persimmons and potted herbs decorated the tables.  And at the end of the night, I realized that someone thought the centerpieces looked so good, they actually took a bite.

They were wed at The Felt Mansion, which is one of my favorite venues in West Michigan.  The classic architecture and the brick, the charming pond and perfect getting ready space.  It’s all perfect.  The mansion’s front door served as the backdrop to the ceremony, with cocktails following in the lawn and a tented dinner.  Desserts were then served in the parlor with Love’s Ice Cream cart placed just outside.

And then we must talk about the dancing.  These people knew how to dance.  Mary and Nic start the night out in style with a very nontraditional first dance songs and an ode to one of my favorite movies, “Kiss the Girl”.  The entire scene was made complete with a guest joining in with an impromptu Scuttle impersonation in the background.  It set the fun tone for the entire night.  While some late night weddings I like to find a place to disappear into the shadows, this was a evening of pure entertainment.

Sweet nostalgia in form of a fragrance, the aroma of bay leaves filled the tent and instantly took Nic back to boyhood memories of his days in California.  I like to think that there will now be a new memory paired with this fragrant little leaf, a recollection of the day he and Mary started their happily ever after.

This wedding was also featured in the current issue of The Knot Michigan.
