Autumn Pictures in December

0 · Dec 22, 2018 ·

Dear Shelby,

December is swirling by much too quickly, don’t forget to savor the season, cherish each moment with your family and remember the reason for the season.  Not only during this sacred time, but the whole year through.

In high school, before each formal dance all of my friends, acquaintances and anyone else who happened to be invited along, would gather together at someone’s house and take pictures of us all dressed up.  There were usually 15 to 30 kids all attempting to look their very best, competing to have the most dazzling dresses, the most impeccably manicured nails, the most memorable hair-dos and the most perfectly coordinated dates.  We’d all line up, our parents or some other poor adult, would pull out our disposable cameras and the photo sessions would begin.  It was never less than an hour worth of primping and posing, making sure each group shot was flawless and we were photographed with anyone and everyone.  Then we’d skip off to the dance, while our parents were tasked with dropping off our cameras to the overpriced 1 hour photo lab because it was imperative that we had the photographic results by the next school day.  If, however, you waited the full 2 or 3 days or whatever standard film developing time was back then, by the time you got your photos back, it would be old news.  We’d already seen everyone else’s pictures and we didn’t care to flip through your photo book a week later.

I think this might have been the start of it all.  In as little as one hour you could get your low quality film scans back from the drug store.  It lead to digital photography, being able to see the pictures the instant you took them and eventually social media which allowed not only you to see them instantly but now your friends to also see them within minutes.  You no longer needed to be in the same room as another person for them to see the results of your fun night out.  Printing at all became optional.

The world keeps moving faster and faster.  We’re expected to do more.  We expect ourselves to do more.  And pressure builds.

This fall, I was forced to slow down – a little.  We moved and unpacking and projects have been unending. That portion of the fall held no rest.  However, I had a list 3 miles long of content for this space.  I had autumn tours, Halloween projects, fall diy’s and then Thanksgiving tablescapes, etc etc to share.  But I didn’t.  Our new house didn’t come with the internet capabilities to do these things.  So I even put off uploading and editing the photos, because if I wasn’t going to share them, then what difference did it make if they just sat on my SD card?

Now there’s snow on the ground, so I can’t share anything from the autumn.  I can’t share how pretty our house looked with the sun twinkling through the golden leaves or the scenic views from our new town.  I can’t share the cute little school house I stumbled across or my kids’ Halloween costumes.  It seems that sharing now would be against the rules.  But who made these rules??Tunnel of Trees | Harbor Springs, Mi

With deadlines and Christmas projects and all the holiday life on the horizon, it starts to feel a bit daunting. I know there’s an underlying importance to each of these agenda items, but what about the other parts of life?  I want to work to live, not the other way around.  Why do we feel like everything has to happen so instantly?  What happened to taking a day of rest?  I don’t think I can any longer fault my 3 year olds’ neediness and impatience when I myself am enforcing the same guidelines.  Its as if we don’t share it this moment, it might as well have never happened. Tunnel of Trees | Harbor Springs, Mi Bunny Halloween Costume | Giraffe Halloween Costume | TownLine Journal

I’m done with these rules.  I’m going to share spring flowers in the fall and if I want to share a photo now (in December – gasp!) that has autumn leaves in it, so be it.  It doesn’t make it any less desirable to look at or these words on my pages have any less meaning.  A personal project of mine for the new year, I want to get back into film photography, which I gave up on because I didn’t get my pictures back fast enough.  Patience.  Everything will happen in time.   If instead I spend more time fluffing a bow on my mother’s Christmas present or sitting with my girls watching a holiday movie, rather than sharing my Christmas décor here,  I think we’re still going to be okay.

I think we all need to give ourselves a break.  Just slow down for minute.  Take in the scenes and soak up as much family as possible.  Remember the gift of Christmas and why we celebrate.  It’s okay if you don’t post pictures of your kids opening their Christmas presents until New Year’s Day (or maybe you forgo social media all together).  Live in the moment with them.  We can stop rushing so much as December is swirling by. Don’t feel like you need to be buried in your phone or have your face hidden behind a camera waiting for the perfect shot.  In doing so, you might just miss out on the perfect day.

My Holiday Living Room Tour

0 · Dec 28, 2016 ·

I know many of you are moving full steam ahead into the new year.  But I’m not there yet.  I’m holding onto Christmas for a bit longer.  I don’t like the idea of rushing to tear my decorations down and discard my beautiful tree.  I like Christmas to linger on as long as possible.

I also find this time between Christmas and New Year incredibly peaceful.  The frantic search for the perfect present and the never ending battle of wrapping is behind us.  I can just sit and relax, finish up a few winter tasks and watch the girls play with their new treasures.

Decorating this year for Christmas was fun.  I had a new living room which gave me a new blank canvas to create in.  I have a back yard filled with an unending supply of evergreens.  And finally I had a mantle of my very own, which is something I’ve been dreaming about for a long time.

I use the same Christmas ornaments for my tree every year.  I love pulling each bobble out and thinking of the memory that it represents.  Some belonged to relatives that have left us years ago.  Some are a reminder of fun shopping trips with my mom.  I have those that symbolize the years that my girls were born.  And a couple that date back to a time when my husband didn’t realize what he was getting himself into and bought me a couple ornaments back when we were dating.  The tree is always the center of my holiday décor.

This year I resurrected a few pieces from my Snow Village.  I used to setup up an entire scene complete with mountains of snow.  I’m not ready to recreate the entire Department 56 in my house like I used to, but many of this pieces were gifted to me by my grandma and it’s fun to get them out.

And when it comes to greenery, I’m always a fan.  I love how adding a couple sprigs can add just the slightest touch of holiday charm to your existing décor.

I’m more than happy to share sources for anything shown in this post however there are too many items collected throughout the years to list them all here, comment below or email me at hello@eventsbythedaysdesign.com if you have any questions.

Hope your Christmas was fabulous!

You Bring Our Hearts to Life

0 · Dec 23, 2014 ·

Burgundy Bridal Bouquet | The Day's Design | Hetler Photography

“We believe in the kingdom come,

We believe in the risen Son,

You bring our hearts to life.”

This is the anthem that’s been ringing through my head this week.  And while this isn’t exactly a Christmas song, is it connected to the holiday theme.  It’s because of Christmas that we can sing this at all. (You can hear the whole song here.)

Just think, if Jesus hadn’t been born in the manger, there would be no risen Son.  There would be no hope, no joy, no peace.  Our hearts wouldn’t have life.

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the presents and hot cocoa or even write blog posts about how much we miss our Christmas trees (I caved and put one up over the weekend, by the way) – but to me this season is really based on hope.  I simply cannot comprehend what it would be life to live in this world without the knowledge that someday I’m leaving and headed to my eternal home.  This isn’t forever and the best truly is yet to come.

May you be surrounded with this comfort and joy as you celebrate this Christmas.

Dear Christmas Tree

Holiday Centerpiece | The Day's Design | Hetler Photography

Dear Christmas Tree,

You are without doubt my biggest joy throughout the holiday season.  I love to peer upon your loveliness and watch your lights twinkle.  I eagerly wait in anticipation for that glorious day in November when it’s no longer “too early” to proudly pick you up from the lot and bring you home to be a part of my holiday traditions.  I dress you up with ornaments that have very little monetary value but so many memories, recalling the story behind each and every sparkly little bauble.

You are sorely missed this year as December has hurried by in a blur, not even leaving moment to reflect and focus on the true meaning of the season.  I haven’t felt any warm fuzzies or had a moment to hang the stockings with care.  You’ll find not a speck of tinsel or garland gracing my home, no pretty ribbons and boxes waiting to share joy on Christmas morning.

With the days of construction dragging on, the anticipation of something new is quickly fading as I long for something old.  I yearn for those time-honored traditions and the glow of Christmas tree lights.  The nostalgia and peace they bring each December is a quiet reminder to be thankful for the blessings of the year gone by.  This year I sadly have found myself forgetting to be thankful for 2014.  May we never forget the many miracles and wonder of Christmas.

Merry Christmas

0 · Dec 28, 2013 ·

My Facebook page informed me that it has been 8 days since I’ve posted anything “your audience wants to hear from you!!” Ha.  I’m sure you’re all on the edge of your seatings wondering what’s happening over here!  Actually, I feel as though I just dissolved into the magic of the holidays, celebrating family and togetherness in its entire splendor.  Nope, no “Happy Holidays” message from The Day’s Design.  Sorry, social media just didn’t find its way into my merriness!

However, that doesn’t mean that good wishes into the New Year aren’t bestowed upon you.  It also doesn’t mean I didn’t wish you a Merry Christmas.

Sadly, someone I know who did post something on social media about her Christmas and it’s true meaning found herself the victim of criticism and hurtful backlash – which boiled down to calling her a hypocrite because she put Christ at the center of Christmas but also loved receiving lots of Christmas presents.

To that I would say this – everyone is entitled to their own version of what Christmas represents.  I love giving presents and yes, I like to receive them too.  I love to shop and find the perfect gift.  I love the ribbons and the bows.  Fires, hot cocoa, the smell of evergreen and the twinkle of lights warm my heart.  But most of all, Christ is at the center of my Christmas.  He is the reason that I celebrate.  Without Him, I can see no purpose for joy, hope or merriment.  The future is dark and there’s no reason to think that there are better things to come.

There are many views regarding the meaning of Christmas.  The reason for my season though, is gratitude.  I have a heart of thanksgiving, not only at Christmas, but throughout the year, celebrating all that God has done, provided and given me.  Christmas is just that additional opportunity to spread that cheer.

So even though I’m three days late, know that my heart was with you, wishing all the very merriest of Christmases and a wonderful New Year!!
