Real Weddings :: Melissa & Tim’s Three Oaks Celebration

0 · Sep 29, 2017 ·

This is a wedding day that I was secretly hoping would never come.  Not that Melissa and Tim don’t deserve each other or that I could ever image sending anything other than well wishes their way, but rather because I knew that once this wedding was over, I would miss Melissa and I’s monthly, and then weekly phone calls.  I would miss scheming behind Tim’s back to line up a several surprises and I would simply miss planning this wedding.

Melissa and Tim have a contagious joy. Everything they do puts their other half at the forefront of their mind. This wedding day was filled with sparkling details, industrial romance and champagne. But it’s Melissa’s thoughtfulness, and the meticulous care that was placed in the little details that will have the most lasting impression on my mind. Champagne is Melissa’s signature drink, it welcomed guests before the ceremony and flowed the entire evening through. The table numbers doubled as notebooks for guests to share their best marriage advice, which will then be read on the corresponding year of marriage. Melissa DIYed drink stirrers, as a surprise for Tim, who collects them.  The list of incredibly thoughtful ideas runs on.

We wanted the entire day to feel very romantic and soft against the contrasting backdrop of Journeyman’s industrial space.  We incorporated layered tones of blush, champagne and ivory textures and accented it in rich greens to pop against the warm neutrals.  The venue is a very large room and can accommodate both a ceremony and reception setup simultaneously, which was our plan.  However, we did not want the wow of being ushered into a glittering room after cocktail hour to be diminished by guests’ wondering eyes curiously intrigued during the wedding ceremony, so we hired The Rental Company to create a draping wall, which would serve not only as the ceremony’s backdrop, but also as a room divider.

After the ceremony concluded, we quickly moved the chairs over to the guest’s tables, clearing the space and making way for cocktails and mingling.  Upon the conclusion of cocktail hour, the draping was pulled back, revealing long harvest tables mixed with round seating, a expansive space for dancing and an 8 piece band.

The best surprise though came at the end of the night, Melissa took a cue from one of Tim’s favorite pastimes, and surprised him with live karaoke—which blew Tim and all the guests away. The bride joined the band on stage, serenading Tim in song and the mic was then opening to others wanting to participate.

Real Weddings :: Justine & Devin’s Glamorous Gala in Downtown Flint

0 · Aug 29, 2017 ·

I’ve been wanting to share this wedding for some time now.  But every time I sit down to tell the story of Justine and Devin’s the words elude me.  I don’t where to start.

I could start with the tale of a girl who has triumphed over the less fortunate happenings in her life.  She forever holds my admiration. Or I could tell of a boy who’s wanted to marry a certain girl since the 6th grade, which is probably the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard. I don’t really know where the love story began, but I’m certainly glad to be a part of it.

You may remember my sister’s Cinderella inspired proposal, which was one of my favorite days ever (you can see it here).  Devin really is her Prince Charming, welcoming her daughter and her into his heart as a true gentleman.

As this wedding touches me on such a personal level, the job of narrowing down photos and pieces to share is nearly impossible, so I decided it was actually worth 2 posts.  Anyone who’s gotten married knows there are two parts to the wedding day.  There’s the pre-wedding – the time spent pampering yourself with your closest family and friends, focusing on the joy to come and preparing to commit yourself to one another forever.  While this time can be beautiful and relaxing, there’s also an electricity in the air and everyone around can feel it.

Part 2 of the wedding day is the post wedding celebration.  There ceremony takes places.  Vows and promises are exchanged and suddenly everyone can celebrate.  There’s a cloud of, well I hate to call it stress but for lack of a better word, stress, that lifts and there’s even more joy, if you even thought that was possible.

Today, I’m telling of the prewedding.  Thinking of the flowers that were placed, the moments spent zipping a bride’s dress and Great Grandma’s pearl necklace that was worn by my mother and myself on our wedding days, and now by my sister as well.  There’s the first moment that a groom see’s his bride and know’s that she’ll forever be by his side.

It’s as though I could share something significant about each and every one of these photos, however I do think that would disrupt the overall flow of this post.  But even now going through all of these, I can feel the anticipation rising.  Even though they decided to see one another prior to the ceremony, you’ll see when I share the rest of the wedding – part 2 of the day – that nothing was lost and the emotion and significance of the ceremony was all there.  This was just the teaser, the celebration is yet to come.

Real Weddings :: Cassie & Jim Wed at Two Hats Ranch

1 · Mar 31, 2017 ·

Every now and then I browse through trend reports and glance at what the “experts” are expecting to be big new fads for the upcoming wedding seasons.  I read one such article not too long ago that mentioned that the influx of animals into weddings and wedding photography was going to be huge in 2017. And I thought, what an interesting but sort of fun, trend.  Then I realized how ahead of the curve my brides actually have been on this note.  I had a zoo wedding awhile back, in which the goats tried to eat her bridal bouquet.  There was a gorgeous celebration at Misty Farms where I was greeted by a sheep on my first visit, a cat sat on my lap and the bride rode bareback on a horse (this one’s coming to Style Me Pretty soon, so stay tuned for that!).  Finally, there’s the one I’m sharing with you today at a whitetail deer ranch, complete with all sorts of horses and hunter’s delights in the woods of northern central Michigan.

I love small and intimate weddings.  While I absolutely understand the need for something on the larger scale, small really capture my heart.  There were just under forty guests who gathered at the family owned ranch.  Chairs were placed in the woods as guests were greeted in southern style with sips of refreshing sweet tea.  Vows were exchanged under an arbor of foraged greens while the bride’s father sat with her bouquet on his lap, which was a moment I simply loved.

From there, guests mingled inside the ranch as the rain started pouring down.  Dinner was served on a covered patio with bistro lights, seersucker napkins and lots of candles and lush blooms.  I shared some of the behind the scenes of this wedding earlier this week here. The results were a perfectly casual, yet joyful air to the entire day with laughter and love lasting long into the night.

Real Weddings :: Olivia & Carter Wed at Monterey Valley

0 · Feb 8, 2017 ·

I’ve gotten to know Olivia over the years as we’ve collaborated on several photography projects as she’s the most gorgeous model.  But there’s nothing quite as sweet as working on a real wedding.

Since she had been exposed to so many pretty projects, Olivia had a great eye and knew exactly what she wanted.  Simply blush blooms, vintage gold details and a rustic barn setting.  It was perfect.

Wedding at Monterey Valley Barn | The Day's Design | Katie Grace Photography

The only down side to a wedding in mid July is the lack of peonies.  Their availability is few and far between.  Those that you can find had a hefty price tag and we just couldn’t make them a reality until Carter stepped in.  About a month before their wedding I received the most romantic of requests from Carter, as he had learned of Olivia’s desire for peonies and he wondered if there was any way he could surprise her with an arrangement for in her dressing room.  Of course I obliged and was even able to sneak a few extra blooms for the arrangement into Olivia’s bouquet.

So as the sun shown down on a hot Friday in July, Olivia and Carter became Mr & Mrs – surrounded with gorgeous countryside, the love of family and friends and of course, beautiful blooms by their side.

Featured :: An Autumn Engagement on Ruffled Blog

0 · Dec 17, 2015 ·

The days are shorter, the air is cool and the world is taking on a golden brown hue. We welcomed September rains, brought out velvet touches and are savoring evenings by candlelight and now have added tinsel to our shopping lists. It’s a clear sign that engagement season is officially upon us. When I saw Wedding Paper Diva’s dreamy invitation suite with its fairytale-like lake scene the whole story of the romantic early autumn proposal jumped to life. With mixed metallics and touches of grey blue, we imagined a lakeside story filled with sequins and wheat grass, where rustic meets elegance and love was surely to thrive. The perfect place to start to the journey to “I do”.

Olivia and Carter made the perfect models as he had proposed to Olivia less than a month before. The chemistry between this gorgeous couple was so natural.  Clifford Lake Inn was the perfect host, which it’s refined rustic decor and understated lakeside charm.  And Sam (of Bradley James Photography) captured the mood of the shoot with absolute perfection.  Today you can see the entire feature over on Ruffled Blog.

Real Weddings :: Tina & Chris

0 · Nov 4, 2015 ·

It’s now the time of year when I’m wrapping up wedding season, summer days have gone by and I’ve started to embrace that cozy late autumn (and even Christmas!!) mindset.  My flipflops have been traded for tall boots and my t-shirts have all been tucked away.  At the same time, I’m chatting with brides who are gleefully planning next years weddings and I have to revert back to that springtime frame of mind.  I’m starting to look for inspiration but my world – craft and decor stores, wedding blogs, Pinterest – is filled with autumn foliage and donuts (not that I mind a good donut!)

So I’m going to pretend that I’m posting this pretty spring day in hopes of inspiring one of next May’s lucky brides.  If nothing else, I’m always happy to reminisce about foxglove and peonies.

Spring Wedding | The Day's Design | Kelly Sweet Photography

Tina and Chris were married at Witt’s Inn in Lowell.  It was my first time visiting this charming little barn and beautiful gardens.  It’s rustic and what one might picture when they think of a barn wedding, until you look up.  Chandeliers.  Beautiful rows of chandeliers.  That sparkle goes straight to a girl’s heart.

Speaking of a girl after my own heart, Tina hired me to take charge of her floral decor and dropped off 65 mismatched gold, brass and copper vessels for me to fill with blooms of my choice – just somewhere in the blush, pink or coral color story.  It was so much fun sorting through each vessel, finding the perfect table mates and making each arrangement completely unique.

So I filled my floral buckets with tulips, roses, ranunculus, lilies, foxglove, peonies, clematis and wild honeysuckle.  I foraged a few greens and added some delicate silk ribbons.  The way they paired with the soft blush underlay of Tina’s dress was perfection.   And everywhere you looked, there was a different bloom, a different arrangement and the prettiest all greenery bridesmaids bouquets.

Dear Tina and Chris, I hope you two have loved your first season together and have many more full of happiness to come.

Willowbrook Mill Wedding | The Day's Design | Kelly Sweet Photography

I was hanging out at a wedding a couple weeks ago… just kidding, I was working my tail off at a wedding a couple of weeks ago and we had just about finished making everything pretty and I was ready to give myself a huge pat on the back. I love that moment when everything is complete, every petal is in its perfect placed, the linens are unsoiled and perfectly laid, and all the silverware is flawlessly aligned with the edge of the table and the chairs are barely grazing each tablecloth. It kind of makes me think back to Edwardian times when people actually took the time to measure the distance between place settings with a ruler, polished each and every piece of silver and would never think of serving a guest with the wrong hand. I like to think I put that much time and care into each wedding, but not quite.

I love this moment. It’s the time when a tent is gleaming in all its glory, just waiting for the guests to arrive. I stood back in admiration as the photographer next to me began to capture the serenity of the entire scene. And then a guest walked it. While he was a fairly dapper looking gent, he wasn’t exactly complimenting the picture. So I kindly explained to him that we were in the process of taking photographs before guests were seated and asked him to wait just a few minutes before entering the tent. What I didn’t expect was a fuss, “Why would you want a picture without any people in it?! Who’s going to look back and think ‘I’m so glad I have this picture of this fork and spoon.” Clearly irritated, he stomped off and the photographer and I laughed.

This incident has stayed with me. I even started to doubt myself and wonder if maybe he was correct. Do couples really care to have these “empty” and “untouched” photos after their wedding day? From a vendor’s point of view, I love them. You’ll see very few pictures flooded with people in my portfolio. Your dear aunt Sally may have been an absolute hoot and a joy of a wedding guest, but her bold black and white dress clashed terribly with the pale blush and white of your décor. There’s a reason you take control of what your bridal party and immediate family wear, you want everything to blend. So do I. But I didn’t hire the photographer and I’m not paying for his services, so am I just being selfish?

I keep imagining a peaceful mountain scene. It’s serene and still, the mountain standing proudly at attention reaching far into the sky with snow gracing the very tops. At the base is a valley with tall grasses and a river that lays there undisturbed. Maybe a moose comes to drink from it daily or perhaps it’s the favorite fishing spot for a local bear and her cubs. It’s beautiful. Now think about what that same spot would look like if it were a famous tourist attraction. There’d be thousands of people in the base of the image, signs offering rides to different heights and flashy lights trying to sell you fried food. It doesn’t make the mountain itself any less beautiful but there’s a different tone and mood. You and your friends will still take a picture in front of the landscape but that peaceful and calm feeling will be gone.

Both images are from an autumn wedding with Kelly Sweet Photography.

A good photographer will capture every moment of the wedding day. A photographer is an artist. And as an artist they seek to find the beauty in all aspects of the wedding. This time before the guest enter, before your little flower girl spilled soda on her dress and the ring bearer rolled in the mud is important. It adds to the story of your celebration. You spent a painstaking amount of time bringing all the details together, finding those perfect ribbons and table numbers. Make sure every piece of the day receives the credit it is due.

Real Weddings :: Tim & Christina

0 · Jun 16, 2015 ·

I have something that I like to refer to as my Wedding Bucket List.  This basically means that there are certain vendors that I long to work with, venues that I’m dying to design in and floral combinations that make me so weak in the knees that if I were able to actually hold them in my hands and create with them my heart might actually leap out of my chest because it cannot hold the excitement.

Last June I received a phone call from the lovely Christina and she started telling me about her wedding this upcoming fall at The Willowbrook Mill in Northport — had I heard of it?  Seriously!!?  Not only had I heard of it, it was at the top of my list!  For me this venue has so much history and meaning, I remember going there as a little girl back when it was an ice cream parlor and listening the Da Yoopers sing The Second Week of Deer Camp and dancing with my grandma as the song played on a beat up old jukebox. Now years later the building has been recreated and is a beautiful wedding venue and combines everything I love about Northern Michigan.  And it meant I got to travel up north, working in pretty much any venue in Leelanau County is a dream come true for me.

As the planning went on, I knew this was a girl after my own heart.  It wasn’t just the rustic wood floors, the glamorous sequined linens or their love for the most stunning California grown garden roses that made me fall in love with this couple, but their love for one another, the way they cherish their family and how God was at the very center of their marriage celebration – that is what truly made this one for the books.

From the bottom of my heart I wish Tim and Christina all the happiness in the world.  Thank you for allowing me to be such a grand part of your celebration, designing a day of love.
