Featured :: Wedding in the Woods on Style Me Pretty

0 · Nov 17, 2014 ·

I have goals, both in business and in life.  I’m not very vocal about these goals even though I’ve heard from numerous sources that voicing them will help you to achieve them.  I’m the exception to this rule.  I’m the girl who just feels even more miserable about herself when I fail and feels like a fool for having to publically broadcast my failure, which makes me never want to set another goal again.  Period.

But one of the silent goals that I have for my little business is being achieved today.  It has been a long time coming with lots of hard work and tears and a constant strife to be better and challenge myself more, which I feel is helpful not only to oneself but also to my clients.  So here I am – The Day’s Design – published on the front page of Style Me Pretty.

Bloom the Workshop :: September Edition

0 · Oct 24, 2014 ·

Well my extremely talents friends are at it again, this past September they brought Bloom the Workshop back to West Michigan and once again I got to be a part.  (You can read all about the first edition here.)  I’m not going to share all the gorgeous workshop details or the behind the scenes but rather I’m going to skip right to the good part, the styled shoot portion.

With fall beginning to close in, the florals were inspired by shades of berry and orange, with subtle touches of pink set against a bold black and white pattern.  A little modern, a little rustic and completely chic describes the tablescape that Michaela designed.  It was my job to adorn not only the tabletop but also provide the models with gorgeous blooms.  2 centerpieces, 2 bouquets a boutonniere and a whole lot of pretty made this shoot come to life at Rockford’s Hydrangea Blu Barn.

Those dresses? Aren’t they just amazing, I wish I had the back to pull that off.  And the cockscomb in centerpiece number 2 is the biggest piece of locals cockscomb I have ever seen!  I can’t wait to see what the these talented girls do for Bloom in 2015!

Styled Shoot Party :: Just a Glimpse

0 · Oct 1, 2014 ·

There’s been an idea brewing inside of me for awhile now and it’s all based on this notion that styled shoots, while absolutely gorgeous, are also a bit of a waste.  I enjoy working without limitations and being able to create whatever I envision. Plus the collaboration between vendors can be a really beautiful form of creative expression.  But at the end of each day I can’t help but feel that I just set up an amazing tablescape, pieced together what was sure to be an over-the-top amazing soiree and now I have to tear it down, without anyone really appreciating it for months to come.

So last month I took a new approach to the “styled shoot”.  Rather than wasting the beauty and hospitality, I invited guests to be a part.  They were guests that I didn’t know, people nominated by others who needed a little love and something extra pretty in their lives.  The results were more than I could have ever imagined.

Southern Hospitality Styled Shoot Party | The Day's Design | Ashley Slater Photography

I’ve yet to sit down with Ashely Slater to browse through all of what are sure to be incredible memories from the night but I can’t wait.  I want to remember the evening that I took a risk and invited complete strangers to a dinner party.  In time, I will also share with you the inspiration, the execution, as well as the hiccups that happened along the way as this was not an easy party to pull off.  But I can promise you, it was worth it!

Full vendor credits will be shared when I post the results in their entirety but for now I’d like to thank Ashley Slater Photography, The Rental Company, Chef Josh Ferguson, Wondrous Whimsy, Kirribilla and Ed Dunnebeck & Girls Farm Market for being a part.

That’s a Wrap… almost

0 · Sep 24, 2014 ·

I have had a delightfully busy wedding season and have just one more gorgeous fête on the 2014 calendar.  Each celebration was so special and unique and I am so honored that so many brides have entrusted me to be a part of their special day.  However, I did something during this wedding season which I said I would never do, and I paid the price.

August was a grand slam of a month.  When I started my business I promised myself I would limit the number of weddings I took on in any particular month or I might lose my mind.  I did not heed my own warning and in the middle of my busiest month – where I not only booked too many brides but also booked two weddings in one week – my grandpa passed away.  In an 8 day stretch I had 3 weddings a funeral, 2 trips to Traverse City and I was an emotional wreck.

Moving forward I realized I will endure and how much I can endure, even though I’m still catching my breath.   I thought being too busy with weddings was a reality I wouldn’t have face for years to come.  It really is an answer to prayer, even if in the craziness of the moment I began questioning every career decision I’ve ever made!  So if you’re wondering what I’ve been up to I really can’t wait to share.  Unfortunately I’ll have to keep you on the edge of your seats a bit longer as I wait for more photos to arrive. However, I will get back to blogging because there are a lot of ideas in this head of mine I just haven’t been able to write about just yet.

And obviously I have to reveal at least a glimpse of one of my happy couples – this bride was too beautiful for words (and carrying a bouquet created by yours truly).

Graceful Wedding Ideas :: A Collaboration of Artistic Forces with Team Flower Workshop

0 · Sep 9, 2014 ·

The first time I decided to collaborate with another planner on a project the feedback I received was less than positive.  I was asked questions about why, how things would work and who would receive the credit. Many times we create these new works of art  for the possibility of them being submitted to large blog or publications therefore gaining ourselves some publicity and secondly proving something – often to ourselves and also to the general public.  When collaborating with another in the same business, there is possibility of confusion.

There’s also the possibility of seeing things in a new light and finding new ways of doing things.  In all reality, collaboration shows teamwork, how one can feed and thrive off of each other’s ideas inspiring even more magical creations to be born.

Other than carrying a few boxes of plates and placing a couple spoons on the tabletop, for this creative masterpiece I can take no credit.  This was the brainchild of another flower friend with imagination and visions that captive me to the point of no words.  Everything about the Team Flower Workshop was beyond belief and I find myself giddy with excitement every time I see another glimpse of the day in my inbox.

My Team Flower friends made this happen, along with many other talented hands, and now I am simply lucky enough to be able to help share the results (which were also featured over on Once Wed last month).

Welcome to the mountains of North Carolina…

Waiting

0 · Aug 27, 2014 ·

Team Flower Workshop | Heather Payne Photography | Waiting

Waiting.  I fear we live in a world where that concept is lost.  It’s old fashioned not to have instant gratification.  It’s rare not to have something new in your hands moments after discovering that you want it.

On Monday, I was sent of preview of what was to be posted on Once Wed this week.  It was all about waiting.  I have waited since May to see the results of the photo shoot which I had a very small role in producing along with my other Team Flower girls.  And it was worth the wait.

“In ancient Hebrew culture when a bride and groom were engaged, there was a time of separation, of waiting. Rather than planning every detail of their wedding day together, the groom needed to leave his bride at her home and go to his father’s house to build a room for he and his bride to live in when they married. She never knew exactly when her groom would return, but she trusted him and waited. This trust brought peace and rest to her mind. In that time she prepared herself for his arrival, fully confident he would return at just the right time.”

The idea of not knowing when something will happen, especially something as big as a wedding, is so foreign.  I feel as though I would explode from the lack of knowledge and constantly living on the edge of my seat, thinking every moment I needed to be prepared, at my best and completely ready.

I must admit, patience is not a strong suit of mine.  But I feel lately that I’ve been sitting here waiting for something – something great, I just don’t know what yet.  I’ve left my blog full of silence this month and I’ve just waited for the perfect thing to share.  And while my month may have been filled with busy, it was also full of questions.  So what’s next?  What exactly am I waiting for?

The above picture is simply a tease, you must see the entire feature starring Kelly Perry of Philosophy Flowers & Heather Payne Photography, along with full vendor credits here.

Bloom the Workshop :: Recap

0 · Jul 14, 2014 ·

I used to think that learning should take place in school.  I thought that to get a good education, you needed to attend a good school or college.  At least that’s what was always preached to me, so why shouldn’t I believe it?  I was taught that in order to succeed in life, you needed a bachelor’s degree and possibly more.  And if you didn’t invest in your education, you were destine for failure.

My thinking has shifted away from what my 18 year old self once thought.  I definitely had those “why do I need to know this?” moments in school, but for the most part just sucked it up and went to class every day believing that this is what would help me achieve my goals and get a good job.   In fact, the thought never occurred to me that perhaps I could teach myself a thing or two, or I could learn from other business people or attend small workshops.

I now think that it’s determination more than anything that will help you succeed in life.  I learned language skills, basic business principles and various other things in college which I’m sure impact me more than I realize.  I believe that college teaches you how to interact in the “real world”.  However pushing yourself and being open to new ideas and learning from one another is HUGE.  Surround yourself with like-minded individuals and people who inspire you – you will absorb so much.

About a month ago I was able to play a small role in bringing Bloom the Workshop to West Michigan.  I supplied some super pretty blooms and did a little behind the scenes work for Ashley and Michaela and helped bring their creative vision to life.  They are the type of people I like to surround myself with.  And the best part is, they want to inspire, they want to teach and they want to see you succeed.  I was able to watch them teach 30 ladies about business, blogging, social media, styling, design, photography and life.  And I left inspired.  I wasn’t even an attendee!

So while I want to share with you some of the pretty that took place that day, I also want you to consider investing in yourself, your creative side and your business.  There’s always something more to learn.

One of my favorite parts of the workshop was how interactive it was.  Ashley and Michaela didn’t give give the attendees a bunch a information and send them on their merry ways, but they also planned a time to put that information and new skills to the test.  The afternoon consisted of a styled shoot portion, which believe it or not, is a great way showcase work in many industries, not just the wedding inspiration shoots we’re so accustom to seeing.  From styling papers to models to flowers and beyond, participants photographed and played with different designs, poses, locations and lighting.

Wet Weather Weddings

0 · Jul 10, 2014 ·

If you’re planning an outdoor affair it’s likely that the thought of rain has crept into your mind.  Or at least it probably should have.  This summer seems to be extra wet, and while I love not having to water my garden and how my lawn is remaining green, it does stress me when it comes to wedding planning.

I’m guilty of saying “the show must go on” and just going for it – I can talk a big game.  So we get a little wet, we’re not going to melt.  Brides with umbrellas are cute.  There are some fabulous opportunities for unique photos.  I can look at the glass as half full, for sure.

And I simply adore outdoor parties.

The start of wedding season for The Day’s Design was a drizzly one despite the weatherman’s positive outlook on the day.  In fact, we later found out that just a few miles away, they didn’t even receive a drop of rain. That’s crazy Michigan weather for you.

We stayed optimistic throughout the setting up process.  We kept moving and utilized our tarps and other coverings.  And we pulled though.  But it wasn’t as easy as glamorous pictures are sure to show.  The heat and humidity cause your clothing to simply stick to you.  Papers were soggy and limp.  My rain boots rubbed on my toes.  There were bugs.  And every time we thought the skies were clearing, fresh droplets were released from the clouds.  How the bride remained staying so fresh and beautiful is beyond me.

I don’t share this to complain about the wedding day. I simply would like to point out the comfort or perhaps discomfort you and your guests might endure should you decide to move forward with an outdoor ceremony on a rainy day.  I wish to express the importance of having a backup plan – although I do understand how hard it can be to utilize that, unless the day is calling for monsoon conditions.   But grounds become muddy and even after the showers have stopped, the canopy of trees above us still produced sprinkles every time there was even the slightest breeze.

You should also consider the policies other vendors have regarding rain.  Some equipment cannot get wet – cameras, sound systems, etc.  And how will the rental company feel if their upholstered lounge seating is returned saturated?   Are you risking damage deposits and extra fees?  Are there wedding details you’re going to have to give up if the rain doesn’t let up?

Wedding in the Woods | The Day's Design | Kelly Sweet Photography

Even with the weather, it was beautiful start to the summer 2014 wedding season– the way the light shown through mist in the woods that day was breathtaking. I can’t wait to share more  peaks from Kelly Sweet Photography.  And after seeing this picture, I’m not sure I would change a thing – including the weather forecast.

Preferred Vendor:: Once Wed

0 · Jun 27, 2014 ·

Oh my stars have I had some excitement happening over here!  The last couple months have simply been amazing — from attending flower workshops to making flowers for Bloom the Workshop — I’m living on a beautiful high!  Plus wedding season officially starts for The Day’s Design TOMORROW!!

As an added bonus (as if I needed something else to be excited about!), I met Lauren from Once Wed at Kelly Perry’s workshop and this sweet girl invited me to become part of the Once Wed preferred vendor guide.  Eek.. how exciting is that!?  So now it’s official and you can see my listing on their beautiful blog.

I would also recommend you check out my new flower friend’s gorgeous new business, Stone House Creative.  I can’t wait to see the magic Lauren’s sure to create.

Happy Anniversary

1 · Jun 19, 2014 ·

On June 19, 2010 I said “I do” to my hubby — if only then I had realized the journey that we would sure to begin.  It’s been full of struggles, laughter, the craziness of buying a house and meeting our beautiful little girl.  A wild ride doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Leelanau Wedding | The Day's Design

But today I thought I could share a little about my “fairytale wedding”, since it’s something I am quite frequently asked about.  I think there’s this common curiosity about the life and romance of anyone who is involved in the wedding industry and perhaps even an expectation that somehow they’re destine to be more romantic, more thoughtful and have “better parties”.  Please push all of these preconceived notions aside as I share my wedding day.

The ceremony took place at my grandparent’s house on Lake Leelanau.  I was a crazy bride who felt like she had something to prove.  I wasn’t yet an event planner, but I was on my journey to being one and knew that was my end goal.  So I thought I had to do everything myself and I diy-ed my little heart out to the point of exhaustion, including my own wedding flowers — but that I wouldn’t have any other way.

Approximately 80 guests were greeted with a perfect, partly sunny, 75 degree day.  We simply could not have asked for a nicer afternoon.  And right there on the shores of Lake Leelanau I vowed to make Hubby mine, forever and always.

We didn’t write our own vows.  We didn’t do anything out of the ordinary.  It was a pretty traditional ceremony.  And to be honest, I can’t remember all the details in perfect clarity, although looking through these pictures is definitely bring back some memories from the day.

Wedding Exit | Lake Leelanau Wedding | The Day's Design | Shannon Scott Photography

I was determined to have great “exit” photos.  So the guest threw birdseed.  I had birdseed down my dress until I laid my head down on my pillow that night.

After the ceremony, we were fortunate enough to schedule lots of time for pictures which also allowed our family and friends to explore a little of Leelanau’s beauty before cocktail hour.  It also gave us a few minutes of alone time which is so valuable on your wedding day.  We took a trolley into Leland, which is where the reception would be held, and it’s so conveniently located to Fishtown and Lake Michigan – 2 must have spots for pictures.

The shores of Lake Michigan will forever own my heart.  Leelanau is truly my home away from home, and it was so special to share such a sacred place with all of our friends and family and celebrate there.  It now holds even more meaning and while I’m definitely a sentimental person, I would highly recommend to anyone host your wedding in a place the feels like home, that feels like where you want to be and where you want your forever to begin.

Wedding at The Old Art Building | The Day's Design | Shannon Scott Photoraphy

Catering by Kelly’s did an amazing job serving our guest a local feast.  The Old Art Building was an absolutely perfect back drop for our reception.  And a huge thank you is owed to everyone who helped bring our day to life 4 years ago.

But the details and memories fade.  Some of the faces in these photos have now left us.  Time moves forward.  So I think we just need to remember to keep everything in perspective and always keep in mind the goal at the end of the day is to be married.  To have that person that you want to spend the rest of your life with by your side.

Old Art Building Wedding | The Day's Design

It’s not about the cake, the dress, the decorations — which are all details I love.  It’s about the one you can’t live without.  The one you want to spend your forever with.

More Than A Face

0 · Jun 5, 2014 ·

Eleven years ago I graduated from high school.  Sometimes it feels like that was a lifetime away, such distant memories of days gone by.  And yet other times it feel like just yesterday I was being picked last in gym, not invited to the party and afraid to give a speech during class.  Memories flood my mind of wandering the halls alone during lunch and people telling me that these were to be the best days of my life.  Needless to say, that didn’t give me much hope for the future.

In case you didn’t perceive it from my previous paragraph, I was not a popular girl in high school.  I didn’t have that charisma that just makes everyone want to be near you, I didn’t have the high end fashions and I was not athletic.  On the other side of that, I wasn’t a complete dork either.  It was as if I was just somewhere floating in between, always trying to figure out where I belonged.

I am sorry to say that this appears to be a lifelong battle.  I’m still not one of the “cool” kids.  The difference now is I have the confidence to be who I am.  I’m secure in my standings and outlooks on life, family and faith.  I am okay with choosing to hang out with my mom instead of going to a work party.  Coworkers come and go, my mom has always been there.

Back in April Kellie (of Hetler Photography) approached me about a project she was working on and without a second thought I said yes, absolutely I wanted to be a part.  She had put together an idea to encourage one another and spread love and belonging through the halls of West Michigan’s high schools.  More Than a Face is a campaign near to not just her, but also my heart because I think as women – either young or old – we need to be reminded that there is more to us than just a face.  We all have dreams, ambitions and goals.  We’re each unique and special.  Life would be pretty boring if we were all exactly like one another.

“Society tells us a hundred different ways that our value is on the outside.  My face.  My body. My outfits. My GPA.

At Hetler Photography {and myself included} we say Enough.  We are more than what’s obvious.  Look deeper.  Each has her unique gifts, strengths, weaknesses.  Her own REAL beauty.”

My role came in the form of creative assistance, styling, props and a few wardrobe suggestions.  But no matter what these girls wore, they were going to be gorgeous because each one truly had a heart of gold.

So meet the girls of More Than A Face 2015.

Today’s Fairytale Inspiration | Model Call

0 · Apr 8, 2014 ·

If you haven’t noticed by now, I love doing styled photo shoots.  They’re these creative fantasies that roam around in my head that absolutely must be set free.  They provide a challenge, something to prove to myself that “I AM awesome” and “I can do that”.  Yes, I give myself pep talks on a daily basis.  It’s also a way to try new ideas, pair new items together and work with fabulous vendors.  There’s a freedom of expression that I’m allowed, which real wedding don’t always provide.  And if one of these new ideas doesn’t quite pan out, it wasn’t a real wedding and my improvisation skills have definitely been honed.

And then there’s also the fact that during slow seasons, I’m bursting.  I HAVE to create something or I just think my brain might literally explode if I don’t get my hands on flowers and tablescapes!

Winter Flowers | The Day's Design | Heather Cisler Photography

So that’s my little segway into this next part… I am in need of a couple models.  In my relentless journey to explore new lands, I am creating an inspiration shoot which will take place in exotic Owosso, MI, on April 22nd.  Heather Cisler and I are looking for a couple to play the roles of our fairytale prince and princess.  Married, engaged, dating – your status doesn’t really matter, as long as you can look like you’re in love!  This is going to be an uber romantic, early morning shoot but I promise to bring coffee and maybe even breakfast!

Interested in being a part?  Email myself at hello@eventsbythedaysdesign.com or Heather at info@heathercislerphotography.com and feel free to send a picture because it’s always nice to put a face with the name.  I can’t wait to hear from you!!

Valentine’s Bouquet Inspiration

0 · Feb 14, 2014 ·

Back in the snow and gloom of January I had an idea.  Valentine’s Day would quickly be approaching and it’s a day that always calls for some gorgeous blooms.  However, sometimes these mounds of perfectly placed, symmetrical and classic roses need a little extra love – ferns and baby’s breath can only do so much.  The careless air of a wildflower bouquet has always been more my style and frankly, sometimes these typical rose arrangements are a bit sophisticated and stuffy for my taste.

So I thought, why not make bouquets out of these readily available Valentine’s flowers that were my style?  You don’t have to have extremely high end blooms to make a pretty bouquet, they just need to be artfully arranged and displayed.  My goal was to gather some of these grocery store blooms and create something gorgeous and over the top romantic.  These are all flowers that are readily available and can be glamorous if just arranged and displayed correctly.  So if your man stops at Speedway on his way home from work tonight, don’t lose heart… you can still have some beautiful flowers!

Valentine's Flower Bouquet | The Day's Design | Heather Cisler Photography

Bouquet Recipe 1:

  • 3 stems pink spray roses
  • 6 cream roses
  • 3 pale pink roses
  • 3 medium (colored) pink roses
  • 4 cherry roses
  • 3 bakers ferns
  • 1 tree fern
  • 1 sprig cedar (salvaged from my back yard – because I promised everything would be easy to source!)

And don’t underestimate the impact a glamorous ribbon can make… the velvet one here is amazing!

Bouquet #2 has a few more components and is a little fancier.  But it still has lots of Valentine favorites including tulips – just to tease you with the thought of spring!

Bouquet Recipe 2:

  • 5 pink tulips
  • 4 stems burgundy mums
  • 2 pink snap dragons
  • 3 medium (colored) pink roses
  • 3 stems pink spray roses
  • 2 cherry  roses
  • 2 cream roses
  • 2 light pink roses
  • 3 stems eucalyptus
  • 1 bakers fern

And I couldn’t resist putting together a little floral hairpiece with some of the leftover blooms, which is a certain way to make any girl feel like a princess!  Then we added some glitter and sweet treats and then convinced Heather Cisler Photography to come play with me in the middle of a snow storm!

Love & Economics

0 · Feb 12, 2014 ·

Occasionally I turn the TV on while I’m working (since I work from home), especially on those days where my main tasks are a little less entertaining (i.e. bookkeeping!)  We live in a cable free home, so my channel options are extremely limited and I don’t find myself distracted by television too often.  But yesterday, Steve Harvey was in the background chatting on about Valentines and love, relationships, etc. etc.  Then he said something that really got me thinking – “You can’t find Mr. Right until you let go of Mr. Wrong”.

Now, I have no idea what your relationship status is.  Whether you’re married, single, dating or kind of hanging out with someone, this statement applies.  It also applies in life situations.  If you’re spending all your time focusing on one project (the wrong one) you can’t move on to the right one.  Time is the key here.  Where are you focusing your time?  Go back to high school economics; this is a classic case of opportunity costs.  Are we missing opportunities while we’re stuck focusing on the wrong man, the wrong job, the wrong _____ (you fill in the blank).

Can I just say how thankful I am that I took a leap and started my own business?  I had a really good job previously, but it didn’t allow me to create, have fun or be myself.  And if I were still there I definitely wouldn’t have put together this pretty amazing shoot that’s featured over on Burnett’s Boards today.  You absolutely need to go see it!

Burnett's Board Valentine's Feature

Spend your time wisely and live life fully. I hope you’re enjoying this week of love!

Oh My Stars Gretta Turned 1!!!

0 · Jan 20, 2014 ·

Are you ready for a dose of adorable this afternoon?  Way back in November (umm… last year!!), my little Gretta turned 1.  So we had a fun and simple, DIY celebration – using items that I for the most part had just laying around the house (read more about this challenge here).  It’s so much fun getting together with friends and family, even if Gretta isn’t going to remember the celebration 🙂

Creating parties around the holidays can be a little extra challenging.  My goal was to create a fun, kid and adult friendly environment that wasn’t too grown up but also didn’t clash with my Christmas decor.  The “Oh My Stars” concept was born.

A little card stock, spray paint, glitter and glue brought these handmade invitations to life.  Actually, those were the components surround most of my projects for this party.  After all, you’re never to young for some sparkle!

Little Sister Getting Married {To Be Continued}

0 · Jan 14, 2014 ·

I have fairly openly blogged about my little sister’s wedding, a little more-so than with other brides and projects I’m working on.  Her wedding has truly been a labor of love with lots of gorgeous details in the works.  There’s also been a lot of anticipation for this event; I hear buzz from wedding guests, other vendors and friends alike.  “You’re going to blog the results, right???” I can’t even count the number of times those words have been said.

But the piece of the wedding that makes the day so beautiful is the love, commitment and the person you have waiting for you at the end of the aisle.  And sometimes throughout the planning process another truth is presented.  Sometimes you realize that your family is perfect just the way it is.

Mother and Daughter family photos

While its human nature to long for companionship, I truly believe the best relationships might be the ones that are right in front of you – your family, your best friend, your beautiful little girl.  Your {future} spouse may not necessarily make your life complete.

My little sister is completely heartbroken after making the tough decision to call off her wedding, which was supposed to have taken place past weekend.  It’s a brave and bold choice to make.  But I fully support her decision and know from the bottom of my heart that she will triumph over this.

I originally thought that this would be the final post in the “Little Sister Getting Married” series, however I have rethought this.  It’s just To Be Continued, a little stalling period to keep the audience in suspense.  I have no doubt that the best in her life is yet to come.

Hats Off to the New Year!!

0 · Dec 20, 2013 ·

With Christmas being a mere 5 days away and the start of 2014 only 12 days from now, I think it’s high time to share my festive little New Year’s shoot I put together a little earlier this year.  Back in September when I began dreaming this up and then in October when this shoot was actually brought to life, it seemed like the holidays would never come.  Snow was a distant dream and I was still living in the memories from last Christmas.

New Years Wedding by The Day's Design

More recently, however, I feel like we’re living in a snow globe!  What I wouldn’t have given to have snow this day in October!!  But instead the day was full of warm wishes and piles of tulle, glitter and ribbons.

The concept of “Hats Off to the New Year” was born in honor of my new Etsy store.  Sequins, glitter, bows, tulle, champagne and all things bubbly and sparkly just seemed like the perfect way my new line of goodies (and the New Year).

This stunning home in historic Heritage Hill served as the perfect holiday backdrop.  I simply fell in love the first time I saw all the dark woodwork and stunning crystal chandeliers and knew the house needed showcase something special.  New Year’s through the decades began to unfold.

Drumroll please!!  Huge day over here… my Etsy shop just opened!!!  What?  You have an Etsy shop?  That’s right loves!!  I’ve been teasing you with little bits about accessories, new things in the New Year  and pictures of some gorgeous models and today is the day that I finally reveal what all this is about!

I started making hats and hairpieces, quite by accident really – a hidden talent I never knew I possessed, until one day I was roaming the aisles of Hobby Lobby (as I frequently do) and saw a giant, oversized artificial flower and thought “that’s not a flower, that’s a hat!” And so my journey began.  I have found myself surrounded with even more tulle, lace and ribbon that usual and amazing people with breathtaking hairpieces along the way.  Now these pieces will be available to you!

Black Tulle Bridal hats

Each piece is completely unique and handmade by yours truly.  The shop will feature lovely designs that I have dreamt up for your special occasion, but I’m always open to custom orders and ideas that are specific to your needs and events.  Of course, I couldn’t just start making hats, I also had to throw a party!!  So here’s just a little sample from my “Hats Off to the New Year” shoot put together with Hetler Photography and I promise to blog more about the whole celebration a little later.  You can also see the feature over on Oh Lovely Day TODAY, eep!!

The Birthday Challenge

0 · Nov 26, 2013 ·

Guess what?!  Miss Gretta is officially 1 year old today!  I can’t even believe it!!  Margaretta James Ferguson, 6 lbs 13 oz, she was born at 11:32 pm on this chilly November day!

Gretta 5 months

Which leads me into my next question, have you read about the contentment challenge?  It is really inspiring me and has helped to focus on needs and necessities verse wants.  Let’s face it, as Americans we are blessed with so much.  Due to current circumstances Josh and I pretty much practice a bare bones living.  Now that does not mean we don’t splurge or do something special now and again.  But as of late, our spending habits are not very frivolous.

In addition, I have really been focusing on “Do what you can with what you have” – another piece of advice passed along to me that keeps ringing through my head.  I know it’s the time of year where we are all supposed to be thankful, which I am, but this goes beyond that.  It’s an ache in my heart.  And at one time it was focus of my business.  When I began, my hope was to prove that you don’t need an unlimited wedding budget to have a beautiful day.  And you definitely don’t need to drive yourself into debt doing so.  There’s something to be said about creating a simply pretty event.   There’s an art to it.

With all this in mind, I am busy busy with my next project.  It’s a very special party for my little birthday girl.  My challenge has been creating an amazing party (which I am well aware that she will not remember – but I have to do it anyway!) without spending any money.  Alright, I will admit, I’m going to spend a little, people need plates and napkins and I can’t resist putting together some beautiful blooms, but beyond that, everything has been created from things laying around the house.  Recycle, reuse and spray-paint!!  It is sort of my own version of the contentment challenge, The Birthday Challenge.  This is a very peaceful mindset and I cannot wait to share the results of the party, as well as this challenge as suddenly I feel like I am able to look at my humble house with new eyes.

In case I don’t have another chance to blog again this week, have a fabulous Thanksgiving!!!

Sex and the City Wedding Inspiration

Eeekk!!!  Did you see my feature over on Every Last Detail yesterday?  I am beyond excited to be published and so happy to finally share all the results from this super girly and glamorous shoot Kellie of Hetler Photography and I put together.  So sit back, relax and scroll through all the pretty (and make sure to stay tuned until the very end for an amazing video surprise!!)

Kellie and I knew we wanted to put together an upbeat, modern styled shoot with lots of sparkle. While we love vintage and it is still very popular, we visualized a sleeker event, with lots of downtown glam. As our concept began to unfold, we aimed to define and pinpoint our big city feel. And no city defines big better than the Big Apple!  So we began creating an event that Carrie and The Girls would be proud to attend…

To start the day, the fabulous ladies at Cheeky Strut knocked it out of the park with the hair and make-up for our models, bringing all the Sex and the City characters to life.

Real Weddings: Jordan & Kait

Meet Jordan and Kaitlin… Kait & Jordan

If high schools sweethearts were to tie the knot on a steamy day in July their day might look like this.  A gorgeous ceremony in her grandparent’s back yard in Muskegon – complete with lots of homegrown hydrangeas – would officially unite them.  And then they would celebrate and dance the night way in downtown Grand Rapids.  Somehow they completely missed the wind and rains that overtook Grand Rapids that day, proving that true love can weather any storm.

The Day’s Design Inspiration Shoot

0 · Nov 1, 2013 ·

A common question that I get asked is to describe my style.  And this is not an easy question for me to answer.  This summer I really tried to channel in on that thought and focus.  What is my style?

First off, I love shabby chic.  Distressed, romantic and soft details make me smile.  I absolutely adore vintage pieces, whether they’re ornate early century finds, mid-century modern or industrial and roughed up.  Just think of the stories these pieces can tell and the hands that they’ve passed through.  Decorating with sentimental pieces warms my heart.  It’s magical when cherishing your past, pieces that once belonged to Grandma or other family heirlooms or even a more current gift.  And then I have a huge love of family.  If you’re trying to figure out your wedding style, just look around your home – your happy place – that should be your inspiration.

So together with Bradley James Photography, I put together a small shoot trying to really focus on my style.  I began with re-imagining my own wedding.  How would I do it today?  But that was so hard with all the fabulous inspiration out there and beautiful events that I have seen.  I sat down and made a list of all my favorite things, I highly recommend this to anyone who is trying to focus your wedding style.

It’s a little bit rustic, a little modern, playful and whimsical all at the same time.  And the color pallet matches my brand and my grandma’s china which is too perfect.  I’m so happy to share the results with you today – let’s think back about warmer weather and lots of sunshine!

Bouquet & Table

My hubby bought me the vintage silverware last year for Christmas, so sweet!  And it looks stunning with Grandma’s aqua plates.

The parasol is vintage, from my mom’s wedding in 1975 – they’ve been married 38 years, such an inspiration!
