Real Weddings :: Sarah & Matt

0 · Feb 27, 2019 ·

Prior to this day, I had never been to Grosse Pointe.  I had never met Sarah in person, despite our many phone calls and email exchanges.  I was traveling alone and it was a long drive.  None the less, I knew this was going to be a good day.

I drove through neighborhoods of impressive houses and perfectly groomed lawns.  The gates and roadways were so well manicured and my rusty Tahoe (rest in peace old girl) stuck out like a handful of sore thumbs against the luxury sedans around me.  I was like a fish out of water, a little country girl from the middle of nowhere Michigan, trying to fit into this gorgeous yacht club scene.  But I reminded myself, it was going to be a good day.

Grosse Pointe Wedding | The Day's Deisgn | Samantha James Photography

Trusty Rusty may have turned some heads and raised a couple of eyebrows, but as soon as people see the beautiful blooms in your hands, any questioning looks immediately disappear.  My doubts fade when I have flowers in my hands.  There’s a confidence in my ability, regardless of where I’ve traveled.  Flowers make people happy.  And this was a happy day.

Sarah and I met for the first time that day.  It was a meeting I won’t soon forget with an embrace as though we were long lost friends.  The energy in the room as the girls were getting ready was contagious.

I met my team on site and we got to work, fluffing centerpieces and placing candles.  Perfecting each arrangement and making sure each bloom was perfectly placed.  The process included hauling marble tables up multiple flights of stairs, carrying 20 some centerpieces into an impeccably designed nautical room and building a table scape on site to be stretched down the head table.  We wrap our ribbons around the bouquets right before they were to be photographed, pinned each of the buttonholes onto the guys lapels and dedicated our day to making sure set up as perfect as humanly possible.  By the time I left the venue, the bride and groom had exchanged first looks, wedding portraits were well underway and the guests were due to begin arriving at any time.

It’s not a process to be hurried.  So much time and care was spent in designing the flowers.  Sarah and I spend hours communicating about her favorite blooms, imagining how they would pair with her napkins and what vessels should be used.  We searched and search for the perfect shade of taper candle (which oddly enough, we swapped out on the day of, once seeing it in the room – terra cotta was exchanged for butter yellow).  I stayed and styled the stationary with Samantha James Photography and moved the table numbers that the venue coordinator placed right in front of the bride’s favorite centerpiece flowers.  Are these tasks that all florist do?  Maybe some, but others just drop the arrangement and run.  But something would be missing if that were the way I operated.  The bride would feel it and so would I.

At 11:00pm that night I came back alone.  I made sure all the candles were burned out and picked up any remaining flowers.  I was tired.  It was a long day.  I had travel ahead of me still.  But the smiles that remained on the bride and grooms’ faces at the end of the night instantly rejuvenated me.  Because this day wasn’t about me.  I knew an exhaustion I felt was all worth it.  I had gotten to be a part of another once in a lifetime celebration.  And it was a good day.

Friday Flowers :: Jessica’s Early Spring Bouquet

0 · Apr 6, 2018 ·

Jessica has freelanced with me for a couple years now and is a flower lover herself.  I’ve been somewhat desperate for someone plan a late winter, early spring wedding because of the stunning variety of blooms available this time of year.  So when Jessica became a client AND she planned a mid-March wedding, it made it nearly impossible to contain myself.  I wanted to buy all the flowers.  And I wanted her bouquet to be absolutely perfect.

Each angle of this bouquet was completely different, the variety was beyond my normal creative scope and its hard to remember what all this bouquet even entailed.  But the star was for sure the ranunculus.  I often have brides come to me not knowing what flowers they love, not knowing their names or just knowing a variety or two that has captured their attention.  One of those often found on the list is the coveted Cloni Hanoi Ranunculus, which is only available during these late winter months.  Ranunculus can be found throughout the year in various shades, but these are nearly the size of a peony and have the ever so slightest kiss of blush – they’re perfection.

Blush Ranunculus

I could have built the entire bouquet out of these beauties.  They’re Italian and dance in a bouquet like a ballerina’s ruffly tutu.

Burgundy fritillaria twirled around the edges, lilacs gracefully extended there blooms and delicate sweet peas added their frangrance.

A few smilax vines added a small touch of green and dried goldenrod brought us back to the local winter season.

I’m excited to bring this Friday Flowers back and can’t wait to share more beautiful blooms with you.  And if you want to see all of Ryan & Jessica’s beautiful equestrian wedding day, you can see it here.

Happy Friday!

Real Weddings :: Olivia & Zach’s Leelanau Love

1 · May 17, 2017 ·

Twirling.  That’s what comes to mind every time I think back to Olivia and Zach’s beautiful wedding day.  I think of Olivia’s sweet spirit and beautiful nuptials on the shores of Lake Michigan.  I reminince about the hot summer sun warming the weathered board walk that lead to a romantic beach location.  I can still see the sunlight dancing across the gentle waves and the chiffon blowing in the breeze – a breeze that I was so thankful for on that hot July day.

Leelanau Wedding | The Day's Design | Bethany Small Photography

But most of all, I picture Olivia twirling between the vines in the most perfect blush dress, fit for a princess.  Once again, I love Northern Michigan weddings because you really can have it all from the sun and the sand, to the breezes that accompany the waves on the shore, the woodland settings and the sprawling vineyards.  It all adds up to the most perfect place to say “I do.”

Real Weddings :: Shayla & John’s September Celebration

0 · Oct 26, 2016 ·

When Shayla and I started discussing her design and color scheme, the first things she did was show me this beautiful autumn sunset photo that was the source of her color inspiration.  It’s an image that I quickly burned into my memory.  And while I seldom referenced the actual photo, the memories forever served as my reference point with its vibrant colors transitioning from rich shades of burgundy, bittersweet, blush and golden rod then fading into traces of teal finally settling with a deep midnight blue.

As a couple, Shayla and John are bubbly and full of life.  Their joy fills a room and they love donuts – so obviously we quickly became friends.  For almost 18 months we worked together filling in details and making sure their wedding was a dream filled with rustic touches, vintage details and a little glam.  The setting set the stage for all things rustic, but adding a few sprinkles of gold and glittering linens against the worn wood tables and chairs created the perfect contrast.  The bright blooms and flower crowns gave Shayla the slightest boho edge and classic pearls and lace rounded out Shayla’s love of various wedding styles.

The month of September serves as a most stunning backdrop for a wedding day.  The warm breezes followed by the cool evening chills, the touches of autumn that have started to fill the air and the apples that dance on our palettes.  While we might all be glad we live in a world where there are Octobers, don’t let it over shadow the glory of September.

Zoo Wedding

0 · Aug 24, 2016 ·

August 23rd has historically been a popular date for weddings.  My parents were married 41 years ago on that date.  We have good friends who were wed on that date a couple years ago.  And last year, I was part of this rustically modern, rose gold infused, rainy yet perfect, party at the zoo.

This was my first daytime wedding and I really loved it.  Carrie and Brian were wed at noon, followed by cocktails and games on the covered patio, lunch in a modern ballroom suspended in the trees and then desserts, mingling and live music by Lindsey Lou and the Flatbelly’s.

Grand Rapids Wedding Photographers | Jamie & Sarah Photography | The Day's Design | Zoo Wedding

At approximately 11:30 that morning, I heard my first crack of thunder.  That’s not a happy noise a half hour prior to an outdoor wedding ceremony.  But one of the best part of hosting a wedding at The Bissell Treehouse is how you still get the feeling of an open air, lofty and wooded space with the protection of an awning. The slight drizzle turned into pouring rain, droplets made their way through the trees, the thunder boomed and Carrie walked down the aisle.  I think it was probably the most romantic rainstorm of all time.  The trees sang a chorus as Brian and Carrie pledged their love to one another.

Inspiration Board :: Dusty & Rustic

0 · Jan 13, 2016 ·

Dusty and rustic, that sounds like quite the combination, doesn’t it?  But I promise it was gorgeous – just like dear Hallie.  Hallie and I schemed about all things vintage, wooden and full of charm.  She adored dusty blue tones and luscious pops of pink.  We aimed for softness, without being too pastel.  She loves bows, lace and lots of girly enchantments which contrasted nicely with the rustic vibe of her barn venue.

Before bringing the day to life, we of course plotted and schemed and dreamt up an amazing mood board to help us define exact what their celebration would look like.  I know some people find it somewhat pointless, but to me I think it’s an invaluable tool.  Hallie (like most brides) had 169 pins on her Pinterest board and while they were all beautiful, there was such a range and plethora of ideas that it really needed to be focused and narrowed.  You can read more about why I insist on creating an inspiration board here.

We sought to combine her favorite things, making sure that the design remained balanced between glamorous and aged elements, old and new and fit perfectly with her something blue.

Real Weddings :: Tina & Chris

0 · Nov 4, 2015 ·

It’s now the time of year when I’m wrapping up wedding season, summer days have gone by and I’ve started to embrace that cozy late autumn (and even Christmas!!) mindset.  My flipflops have been traded for tall boots and my t-shirts have all been tucked away.  At the same time, I’m chatting with brides who are gleefully planning next years weddings and I have to revert back to that springtime frame of mind.  I’m starting to look for inspiration but my world – craft and decor stores, wedding blogs, Pinterest – is filled with autumn foliage and donuts (not that I mind a good donut!)

So I’m going to pretend that I’m posting this pretty spring day in hopes of inspiring one of next May’s lucky brides.  If nothing else, I’m always happy to reminisce about foxglove and peonies.

Spring Wedding | The Day's Design | Kelly Sweet Photography

Tina and Chris were married at Witt’s Inn in Lowell.  It was my first time visiting this charming little barn and beautiful gardens.  It’s rustic and what one might picture when they think of a barn wedding, until you look up.  Chandeliers.  Beautiful rows of chandeliers.  That sparkle goes straight to a girl’s heart.

Speaking of a girl after my own heart, Tina hired me to take charge of her floral decor and dropped off 65 mismatched gold, brass and copper vessels for me to fill with blooms of my choice – just somewhere in the blush, pink or coral color story.  It was so much fun sorting through each vessel, finding the perfect table mates and making each arrangement completely unique.

So I filled my floral buckets with tulips, roses, ranunculus, lilies, foxglove, peonies, clematis and wild honeysuckle.  I foraged a few greens and added some delicate silk ribbons.  The way they paired with the soft blush underlay of Tina’s dress was perfection.   And everywhere you looked, there was a different bloom, a different arrangement and the prettiest all greenery bridesmaids bouquets.

Dear Tina and Chris, I hope you two have loved your first season together and have many more full of happiness to come.

Real Weddings :: Nolan & Jessica

0 · Apr 29, 2015 ·

I don’t know if I believe in destiny or fate, or that there’s only one person in the whole world that you should marry and (finger’s crossed!!) you’ll meet them and timing will be perfect and you’ll fall in love.  I do however, believe that God has a plan and know’s exactly what’s going to happen before we even have a chance to contemplate the possibility.  I suppose he controls our destiny then.

Nevertheless, I think the way our paths are intertwined is really interesting, and our story of friendship is no exception.  Back when I was just an under-aged, beauty school grad, I also had a late night weekend gig at a bar.  And so did Jessica.  However, we rarely had a chance to speak and although we worked at the same club, I’m not even sure I knew her name – she was just the girl with the most amazing highlights.  And she’s always been someone I remembered and who stood out in my mind.

Fast forward a few years and here we are.  I met my husband who happened to be best buds with Nolan, who would eventually become her fiance.  My husband predicted from the beginning these two were in it for the long haul.  And I guess he was right.  Anytime I get to be involved in someone’s wedding day is really special to me, but when the bride and groom happen to be a couple of your closest friends it becomes one of the highest honors.  It was more than just a wedding, it was a very happy celebration.

In the height of dahlia season, we watched Jessica and Nolan say “I do” at the historic Felt Estates.  I handpicked every flower myself with sweet Jessica in mind knowing how important this day was, knowing that in just a few short hours she would marry her best friend, a relationship that I was lucky enough to see from the beginning.  And will continue to see for years to come.

Real Weddings :: Heather & Dave

Downtown Grand Rapids Wedding | The Day's Design | Northern Art Photography

Often when I big working with couples, I can’t help but relate back to my own wedding and that experience.   I channel back to the excitement, the stresses, what we found most important as a couple and the details that I cherished most as a bride.  I think about not only what I might have done differently, but also what I did right that just made the day.  I remember the emotions and how the day just simply seemed to fly by… especially for a bride who decided to do just about everything herself.

It’s for that reason, that I’m so happy when a couple reaches out in need of a day-of coordinator.  I know hiring a full on wedding planner is not for everyone, but your wedding day is a fleeting moment, a flicker in the overall scope of your life but you want the memories to last a lifetime, so let’s make sure they’re good ones.

It was a joy being a part of Heather and Dave’s wedding.  Heather told me on one of our very first meetings that one of her biggest concerns is that everyone gets to have a great time.  I think an excellent time was had by all.  Heather and Dave are that couple who just radiate fun, and it’s contagious.  I was able to work at two new venues to me – with the ceremony being held on the Blue Bridge in Downtown Grand Rapids and cocktail hour and the reception followed shortly after at The Downtown Market. This was one of the few events last summer that I didn’t get involved in the overall design, but with Heather’s great taste, I didn’t have to.   It was modern, chic and right on trend but the day the still held on to a little romance with bride’s chose of keeping a soft pastel color palette.

Cheers to Heather & Dave, it was a pleasure to be even just a small part of your celebration!
