Seeds

0 · May 2, 2017 ·

If you were to take a trip to the house where I grew up, you’d head a few miles outside of a small town.  Travel down a dirt road framed by a perfect archway of oak and maple trees and land at a dusty driveway just beyond a swampy ditch full of cattails.  There sits a small blue house on 2 acres, with a miniature hill (perfect for sledding), an above ground pool (with a semi-circle deck hand built by my dad) and an old aluminum swing set in the back yard. This was home.

Each summer, my mother and I planted flowers around the edge of said pool, the side that wasn’t framed by the wooden deck.  This is where I learned to plant and sow, how I watch the magic of seeds becoming sprouts and transforming into beautiful blooms.  I suppose this may be where my love of flowers really came from.

I have magical memories of this time in my life.  Memories of collecting dandelions, wondering barefoot in the yard until the grass became too crunchy under the summer’s heat and squishing wild mushrooms beneath my shoes, despite my dad telling me not to.   I still recall the scent of the honeysuckle that climbed up the trellis providing shade to our back deck’s swing.  The rose bushes that were nestled beneath our bay window kept mesmerized for years.

Today I seek to recapture that magic, with my two girls by my side, we forage, plant and arrange nature’s bounty – transforming flowers from around the world into a one of a kind wedding display crafted especially for you.  Moving to the country has given me this gift.  We have acreage to explore and adventures to be had.  This year, I’m even planting a few of my own seeds, even if I’m not exactly known for having a green thumb.  I no longer have an excuse to at least try.  And when I successfully grow a flower to place into a bride’s bouquet, I know that will be the highlight of my summer.

Garden plans are in the works and my seed packets have arrived, some of them are already standing tall in their starter trays. I’m so excited to share the progress (or failure!) that lies ahead.  I’m going to grow some flowers this year.

The Science of Moving

0 · Mar 5, 2016 ·

Newborn Photography | The Day's Design | Hetler Photography

If you don’t love it, leave it.  That’s the name of the game this week. On Monday, we will be handed the keys to our new house.  Done deal.  We’ll begin the process of moving on…

It’s a very surreal feeling.  I’ve been going through the process of packing and decluttering but it’s almost as though I’m just watching myself and not really in the moment.  And I hate packing.  Between the ages of 18 and 25, the years between moving out of my parents’ house and when I got married, I moved at least 11 times.

In moving that many times, you’d think that I might become pretty good at it.  I might even have it down to a science.  However, that’s not the case.  Every time I moved there were always boxes that remained unpacked – which was definitely nice for the next move – but obviously they were unnecessary items.  There are still boxes in my basement that I’ve never unpacked and we’ve lived here for 6 years.

So this time around I’m trying to do things a little differently.  My motto, if you don’t love it, leave it.  I no longer have a desire to be surrounded with things that I don’t love.  I don’t want to hold onto things that “maybe I’ll wear someday” or “I might find a use for down the road”.  I have a deep desire to simplify and create a space that’s homey and useful.  That’s not to say that I won’t live in a highly decorated, aesthetically pleasing place, but I’m just changing my approach.

I have a tendency to hold onto things. Sometimes for sentimental reasons and other times for no real reason at all.  Why do we as humans have such an attachment to our “stuff”?  Worldly treasures, they mean nothing in the long run.

As I’m going through and deciding what to keep and what gets tossed in the box labeled “good stuff that I don’t want to keep”, it’s like a trip down memory lane.  And I only want to keep the good memories.  I want things that make me smile.  Those are the only things that I want to be attached to.

Speaking of things that make me smile, the picture above is for nostalgia’s sake from Willa June’s newborn session with Hetler Photography.  She turns one next week, March 12th.  And Gretta, still loves being a big sister and her books.

A Fall Family Photo Session

0 · Feb 24, 2016 ·

Just as the trees were dropping their last few leaves and before the blistery cold came billowing in, I realized there was a moment to be captured.

They say that things change with your second child and I couldn’t agree more.  Time slips away faster and the days of being a baby are soon forgotten.  The months have fled and I’ve hardly even looked at these pictures.  I have piles of things that will “someday” hit the blog, both personal and work projects.

Meanwhile, Gretta has grown to a big sister of 3 years.  In one breathe, it all seems so natural as if this is how life has already been.  But I’m fearful that it will all too fast just be gone.  Willa June turns one next month.

Don’t forget to schedule in a few play days.  Have a friend follow you around with a camera as you walk by the river, inspire an impromptu game of peek-a-boo and just remember life as it is. 3 Year Old Toddler Pictures | The Day's Design | Katie Grace PhotographyAda Park Family Session | The Day's Design | Katie Grace PhotographyRiverside Family Photo Session | The Day's Design | Katie Grace PhotographyBlack and White Family Photography | The Day's Design | Katie Grace PhotographyAutumn Family Photo Session | The Day's Design | Katie Grace PhotographyVintage Kids Coats | The Day's Design | Katie Grace PhotographyFall Family Photos | The Day's Design | Katie Grace PhotographyAda Michigan Photography | The Day's Design | Katie Grace PhotographyFall Family Photos | The Day's Design | Katie Grace Photography8 Month Baby Photos | The Day's Design | Katie Grace Photography8 Month Baby Photos | The Day's Design | Katie Grace Photography8 Month Baby Photos | The Day's Design | Katie Grace PhotographyFamily Photos in Ada Park | The Day's Design | Katie Grace PhotographyFamily Photos in Ada Park | The Day's Design | Katie Grace PhotographyThank you to Katie and Lisa of Katie Grace Photography for being that friend and helping us preserve these precious moments.

A Note on Gratitude

0 · Dec 1, 2015 ·

As we’re all perfectly well aware, this is the time of year that we’re all supposed to be thankful. I’ve been trying for well over a week now to put together a post on gratitude and thankgiving. I wanted to write something profound and moving. I’ve put together draft after draft and had even committed to posting one last Wednesday and then my website host went ca-poof and the kibosh was put on that plan as my blog was down for an entire day.

My mother used to blame the devil for little acts like that. She wasn’t the type to call that boy “the devil” or give Lucifer credit for mass shootings, etc. It was the little things that she used to say were acts of the devil – things like getting into an argument on Sunday morning making us late to church. He’s sneaky like that and tries to keep you from worship.

So on Wednesday after I spent hours crafting a post about being thankful to our Heavenly Father and sending a few praises His way, this happened and my blog just didn’t exist. My mother immediately came to mind. I’m not sure if it was really his handy work or if perhaps I just wasn’t supposed to publish that draft, I wasn’t completely satisfied with it anyway.

Either way, I’ve come to the conclusion that I am over thinking it. I keep feeling like gratitude should be easy to come by. I have food on my table, a roof over my head, a beautiful family and the list goes on and on. But I’ve been searching for thankfulness and contentment still.

And then I realized I don’t need to search for it, it’s just here. It’s all around me. Why am I working so hard to find a warm and fuzzy feeling? I need to just embrace the feelings that are already in my home. My life is a mess. My business is not perfect. My kids are driving me crazy at this very moment. I will always and forever find things to tweak and change and try to perfect in my life. But I need to embrace the thankfulness in the here and now and stop looking out the windows beyond my own home.

Mommy of 2

0 · May 12, 2015 ·

A day late and a dollar short.  That’s the story of my life right now.  This is my mother’s day blog post… which in fact is even being posted 2 days late.  The most frequently asked question of my personal life is all about being a mommy of 2.  How is it?  Is it easier/harder?  Does Gretta love being a big sister?  Is Willa June a good baby?  Are you getting much sleep?  Cue the super mom comments…

So here we go.. I’m a mommy of 2 beautiful little girls.  My business is having it’s busiest year yet.  I work from home and have yet to secure a summer sitter.  And most days I just classify as a big huge fail.  Truth be told, life is CRAZY!  At any given moment you might find me holding a baby, typing an email and teaching Gretta how to unpack my new floral containers and pick up wayward stems (she might as well learn to earn her keep!).  Every single day is a new adventure.

In lieu of all of this, I think it’s appropriate to reflect back a moment.  Those first few days were a little simpler, the hubs stayed home from work, Willa June decided to take naps and Gretta was still a bit unsure about this new phase of life.  The time will fly by quickly, it’s hard to believe that Willa June is already 2 months old.  Pretty soon there will be two chatty little girls running around the house and we’ll be in the next season of life.

Sharing Thanks

0 · Nov 26, 2014 ·

It’s Gretta’s birthday today (can you believe she’s 2 already!? Flashback to her 1st birthday here) and I’m busy making cake, wrapping a quick present and packing to head out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday but in the midst of it all I’m going to totally be cheesy and cliché here and share a few of the things I have to be thankful for.

Gretta James turns 2 | The Day's Design | Hetler Photography

No doubt this has been a year of trials and struggles, I feel like a broken record as I’ve said that about the last few years in general. There’s been loss and heartache, ups and downs and challenges for sure.  I cannot deny that life is full of struggle.  I am hardly the eternal optimist.

Never the less, I am thankful for this space where I can share little tidbits and advice, tips on wedding and life planning, creating beautiful blooms and parts of my heart.  I am thankful for you who continue to read the random thoughts that I choose to blog about.  I’m thankful that you don’t criticize and critique me too much.

I’m so thankful for all the couples who have hired me to be a part of their 2014 celebration.  I finished my last wedding of the season this past weekend (yes, I know I said that at the end of October but I snuck one more in there – more on that later!). I’m ready for a time of rest and refresh until next year which will undoubtedly be my busiest yet, it’s looking seriously fabulous and I can’t wait to celebrate with my 2015 couples!

And I’m thankful for my family.  They’re crazy, and often annoying and pushy and intrusive and completely loving, supportive and the greatest people ever.  The definition of family is constantly changing for me as people seem to come and go out of my life.  There’s the pain of loss but on the other end, we also celebrate the joy of new life.

This joy will be celebrated again in 2015.  We’re excited to announce that our family of three will soon be four, with our newest addition set to arrive mid-March.  And we’re thankful for that.

So may you all be blessed and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

An Evening in the Orchard

0 · Jul 21, 2014 ·

Spring brings a magical time when blooms are all about.  I love finding excuses to drive by the orchards in all their flowering glory.  The cherry orchards might just be my favorite as they remind me of my childhood trips to Grandma’s house but just about any flowering tree will bring a smile my my face.

This year I promised myself that I would have more pictures taken.  I want to capture moments in life before they fade away.  I want to remember Gretta’s spiky pigtails, how she hated to wear shoes (but loved to carry them around) and the way her eyes light up every time she sees her daddy.

Back in May these two things collided.  My friend Kellie so graciously offered to spend a evening in a blossoming apple orchard and help me preserve a piece of my life.  Thank you Kellie.  Now the challenge is to pick my favorites to hang on my walls.

Rest

0 · May 22, 2014 ·

Yesterday I returned home from Philosophy Flowers workshop.  First off, let me just say that Kelly Perry herself  is an absolutely enchanting and sweet soul with a huge passion and fabulous eye for floral.  Secondly, each and every other girl I met while there was just as delightful.  I was truly in flower heaven sitting with my flower friends in the mountains of Boone, NC.

One of the common themes that kept repeating itself throughout the workshop was the idea of rest.  While this workshop did truly feel like more of a vacation than “work” – I would not necessarily say it was restful.  Truth be told, I was exhausted by the end of my trip – and getting up at 3:30 in the morning to travel home didn’t exactly help that!

But when I finally made it home, I saw my world in a whole new light.  Stepping away from the everyday enabled me to be filled with new wonder upon my return.  Yesterday I took a walk and I simply saw things differently.  I fell in love with flowers even deeper while away and that new light and appreciation followed me home.  I stopped and picked some branches and blooms up along my walk.  I paid attention to the very subtle color variations and imagined all new flower combinations.

Rest is good for the soul.  Working too hard will just wear you out and make you weary.  We weren’t put on this earth to be run down, but rather to embrace new friendships, to worship and rejoice.

Enjoy your Memorial Day and get some rest friends, I’m going to spend it with my little family {pictured above by Hetler Photography}!!
